Feb. 13: Cupcakes and toppers

Valentine’s Day is almost here! I made a batch of cupcake for work, complete with handmade toppers.
day 13 - butwait - biscotti
One batch cherry almond, one batch chocolate-cranberry-almond. Mmmmmm!

valentines treats for my sweetie
Since we agreed not to spend money on eachother for valentine’s day, i decided to make heart shaped rice krispie squares for my boyfriend. This was my first ever attempt at making them all by myself IN THE MICROWAVE (which i just found out about today)
I couldnt find any valentines day colored marshmallows (which i read existed) So i got the multicolored pack and seperated all the red ones and mixed the red with a bag of white.

The actual making of the squares took less than 5 minutes and since i had to rush it all to get done before it hardened, i have no pictures of the in between. I used a heart shaped cookie cutter to make 4 hearts and then threw the rest in a pan.
They turned out nice and pink and i wrote on them with that icing stuff in a tube.
Here is the end result! (i think i did fairly well)

they say I love you, Be mine and Je t’M (french)
I am very excited to see his reaction!!
Day 12 - Trying to work up a little V Day inspiration
Creative energy is low tonight so I figured now would be a good time to get busy trying out my ideas for the hubby’s VDay card. This is most of picture one. There are a few other layers not present here but in case I use this one I don’t want him seeing it all. I’m not sure if I like the effect I put on the roses. Doesn’t really scream warm fuzzy thoughts. Tell me what you think. Cool or freaky?
Robotic Love gift card holder
Is it okay to be boring sometimes?
Today I had planned to do a paper collage, but I couldn’t get the inspiration for it. Paper just isn’t giving me the love today so I decided to go back to felt for one day and I made another gift card holder instead.
I made the eyes using that french stitch and the eye on the left came out like it’s supposed to look! I’m real happy about that. It pays to be persistent and practice!
No promises for tomorrow.
Thing 10: A Freezer Paper Stencil Heart
Freezer paper is a great quilter’s secret. You can cut out shapes from it and iron them onto fabric, where they will stick temporarily. This is a handy way to create a stencil for fabric painting. I made a heart stencil for Valentine’s Day and used a rubber stamp ink pad that works on fabric.

Feb. 11: Embroidered dish towels
For Valentine’s Day for my mom, aunt and a co-worker, I took some clearance dish towels and embroidered them with big kissy lips courtesy of Jenny Hart’s Sublime Stitching patterns.
Of course, as my flu meds come to an end, I wrapped all three towels before taking a picture of them for this post. Classic! But trust me, they were cute.
Day #9: Sort-of-Broiled Tofu — Valentine’s Day Edition
Am I the only person who’s ever thought of taking a cookie cutter to tofu? I doubt it.
However, this project didn’t turn out quite like I’d planned. I made the broiled tofu recipe from Veganomicon, dipped my tofu in braising sauce, placed it on a lightly oiled baking sheet, put it in the oven, and set the timer for 5 minutes. The total broiling time in the recipe is 16 minutes, but knowing my oven as I do, I knew that it would probably be 8 minutes, so I went and did something else and came back with one minute left on the timer to find the pan smoking. I think the pan itself started cooking at the edges.
I don’t have a broiler pan, but just used a baking sheet as the recipe said to do. However, my baking sheets are cheap and have been in that “ruined, but not enough to throw out yet” state for months. Well, tonight was the clincher. I’m getting some proper steel baking sheets before I bake anything else.
Since only the edges of the pan burned, the tofu came out OK. It didn’t have the broiled texture that the recipe describes because it was only in the oven for four minutes, but it came out like lightly baked tofu and was still good.
more for Valentines Day

…so I found some more hearts - bigger ones this time and made some pendants.
There is a mix of genuine Venetian glass, Chinese millefiori glass, handmade glass, rose quartz, green aventurine, and rubyite.
I must admit I cheated and used some ready made ribbon necklaces to hang them, but I think they are pretty.
Day #4: Heart Desktop
Ok, so I was not feeling very creative today. However, I am excited about Valentine’s Day for some reason. And, I’m getting tired of my desktop. So I decided to combine these two things and make a simple heart desktop.
It seems that I am so artistically inept that I cannot draw a decent heart or photoshop one from scratch. So, I took a public domain drawing of a heart that I found and manipulated it for my devious ends.
Ta-da! If you like it, feel free to use it. My desktop res is also a little wonky, so you’ll probably want to manipulate it to fit your desktop, unless you too have 1280 x 786.
Feb. 4: Valentine mail wreath

Continuing my “I need to decorate my apartment for Valentine’s Day” theme, I created this wreath by using a chipboard frame and adding Martha Stewart papercraft stickers. I loved the envelopes, and I think it worked out pretty well for my front door.
Feb. 3: Valentine Playing Card Garland

I found these pink playing cards this morning at the grocery store, very unexpectedly. I picked up a pack, thinking I could make something with them today, and I did- Valentine’s Day garland for my apartment!
