Greetings From Fruitvale

Quick Grey Heron from an old national geographic I found in the dentist’s waiting room:day-5a.jpg

after I broke out from dentist I had about an hour and a half to kill in the east bay. So, naturally, I decided to wander along the railroad tracks with a camera in a dishevelled little town called Fruitvale.  I got some exercise, a busted knee and some seriously amateur photos to show for it:

Changing my thing

I’m still going to pick up trash, since I do that anyway, but I think I am going to draw as my daily thing.  I’m going to do Robot Portraits.  I did one of my friend Mark and it came out cute (I think).  I may have it in a postable format.

RobotPortrait

He misspelled “portrait,” not me.

My thing a day

I’ve been thinking about doing something a day for a while.  I recently found the Skull-a-Day website, which totally inspired me, but I’m not that artistically inclined.  Actually, I don’t want to share my artistic flounderings with the blogosphere.  If I did a drawing a day I’d get better, but I don’t want anyone to see the starting point after I’ve been out of practice for so long.

So, on my way in to work this morning I saw a big plastic bag in the parking lot and I picked it up and tossed it in the trash by the door out of habit.  I do this a lot-pick up after other people.  And it hit me.  I’ll pick up a piece of trash a day.  I’ll try to take photos, I guess.  Maybe I’ll just keep a log of what I’ve picked up.  Maybe if I find something good I’ll keep it.  One piece of trash a day out of the parking lots of Austin may not make a huge difference, but maybe people will see me and realize the world isn’t their trash can.  Especially the people in my (to remain unnamed) apartment complex.  I’m not going to wait until February to start, either.
