#26-#28 Drawings from lunch

Took a nice, leisurely lunch today and did these drawings, then messed around with them in photoshop. The wash looking stuff are from a Warm Grey 4 copic marker.

These two were copied from the newspaper

DAY 23: No thanks to you, dickwad

Today was WonderCon in SF, which I stopped by on a whim and was thoroughly underwhelmed by. One aisle of Alternative Press Expo packs in about 10 times more interesting work, I’d say.

Right now, I’m fighting off a migraine brought on by the rainy weather. UGH.

A little scene today, instead of the usual mish-mash of faces. The guy came out first, and Batman (a la Darwyn Cooke) came second, by way of non-explanation. I am happy with how gnarly this naked man looks.

DAY 22: CREEP PARTY!

I fell asleep while drawing in bed last night, after a looooong, busy week at work. I was i) very hungry and ii) checking out our Warren Magazines CREEPY poster across the room. Here is the result:

Sun Conures

Today’s things are three sketches of sun conures inspired by an LJ friend. A sun conure is a small parrot that’s actually kind of like having a dog with feathers. They are extremely smart and extremely loud, and not for everyone.

DAY 20: ALL HAIL SHIT DRAGON (HOW COULD YOU?)

Weird stuff today as the brush pens I bought on January 31 are running out of ink and drying up. I have been sitting down at 8PM and drawing for 30 minutes straight for the past few days. Sometimes this formal taskmastering leads to really mundane junk, but I was actually pleased today with what came out. Who knows?

DAY 19: I’m sorry. Yes, that’s Hitler.

I’m happily back on track with my Things-A-Day. Except, I was looking at Tezuka’s Adolf again and got struck by a few different takes on how he does fury and melancholia.

YES, THAT’S HITLER. I WON’T APOLOGIZE (OH GOD, I’M SORRY).

DAY 15: Robot loses the Love War (& a comic-in-progress)

I was staring at some photocopies of pages from Osamu Tezuka’s epic Phoenix series, and hurriedly copied this robot design shape for today’s Thing. His 12-volume Phoenix story depicts literally anything or any place that you’d ever want to learn to draw. He is my illustration Jesus.[media: sakura sumibrush pen, kimberley pencil, disneyland autograph book](PS: You can also see Tezuka’s Adolf vol. 1 on my shelf if you look closely)    UPDATE: I was feeling productive, so I did a version 2 (version 1 was scrawled on a napkin a few months ago) of a 4-panel gag comic I wrote for the back page of comic strips for my zine. I need to find someone (AHEMcalvin?derek?sophia?AHEM) to do the final version and get the visual preciseness just right.

DAY 14: not my cup of tea

This is probably my least favorite Disneyland autograph book page so far, but today was busy, busy all day. In good news, I bought two tickets to Japan for my gf and I for a vacation in April!  SO EXCITING. DAY 14: ARMS, TREES, DOGS, GOBLINS, and an IDIOTIC BIRD [media: sakura foam sumibrush, zebra small brush pen]

Thing #13: Valentines

Aww… sadly, my post last night didn’t make it, so here it is again, a day late:

A love-themed sketch I finished today.

And because I really wish I had more time in a day or a time machine or something, I present this crazy doodle.

DAY 13: two strange pages

Very sleepy tonight, but two pages of doodles in the (yes, you guessed it) Disneyland autograph book: CAST: A melting version of the cat at Borderlands (my local sf bookshop), 3 boner ghosts and an ugly dancing/sexy tomcat a la Paula Abdul’s “Opposites Attract” video Cast:  A simple crying face (I actually kind of like this one). [media: sakura foam sumibrush, zebra small brush pen]

DAY 10: sketchbook page

DAY 10: I stole this directly from an issue of UNLOVEABLE. I re-read all of Esther Pearl Watson’s comics this weekend and was reminded of how much I love her work. I wish I could draw like her naturally– her aesthetic is so right on!

DAY 8: sketchbook page

Finally recovered and getting back to work on projects. From here on out, I’m limiting myself to a page of sketches a day in the Disneyland Autograph Book. Not as ambitious as I’d first hoped, but it sets a nice time limit for each day that I think I’ll be better able to keep.

I have been fooling around with the paint program that came in the Accessories file with my computer and my fairly new Wacom tablet and stylus. This really simple paint program seems to work very well and “feels” like pen and paper which I am loving. It is not nearly as intimidating as another complex drawing/painting software trial version I had downloaded. That one was so fancy that I was deterred from trying to learn the idiocyncracies of my stylus.

Soon I am going to try some iron-on transfers from some of these designs (or similar drawings).  I’m working on logo ideas, visuals for a soon to be started blog, various design concepts that will go somewhere in time I hope. I’m having fun.

This morning I spent some hours making plastic bag yarn. I am intending to crochet some containers out of it after being inspired by a posting on the Craft zine blog. I tend to just wing my patterns and it usually works. The last plastic bag yarn things I made were a crocheted holiday garland for my balcony and a round loom knit shopping bag with a crocheted handle. I added ordinary twine for strength. The basket will be the daily thing soon.
