Paper Beads and more Shrinky Dinks

I think I was looking at Craft’s blog when I stumbled upon a great tutorial on how to make beads from recycled newspaper. Today I decided to give that tutorial a try and I’m partially through the process. The beads take several days to dry so it’ll be a while before I can paint them, hopefully by the 29th! Yikes! Anyway, I boiled the water with the newspapers inside and waited for about an hour and then rolled the beads, which took about twenty minutes or so.

While I waited I made some more shrinky dinks:

a black cat with big yellow eyes (in honor of my ever-so-curious feline companion Phoebe who modeled for me), an owl and a friendly heart.

Thing 19, the Owl of 40 Prospect Street

Thing 19, owl

The inspiration for this badge: in the ’70’s, my grandparents lived at 40 Prospect St, and my Grandmother collected owls. She also had some pretty large flowered wall paper in citrus tones.

Day 11: Hand Embroidered & Beaded Cooky Owl

This is a cooky owl.  I started out by sketching out little owls and cut one out to use as a base pattern, but decided against it.  I ended up looking at my favorite pic and then just free-form cutting out the owl pieces.  Then, I hand embroidered the owl onto a bas fabric using different decorative stitches.  I found the perfect beads to use as the feet in my bead stash and used bugle beads for his beak.  The eyes are the same button but I decided to turn one right side up and one right side down.  I think I am going to use this in a purse….maybe patchwork this into the flap…not sure yet.  Just needed to do something crafty for the challenge *smiles*

Shrinky Dink Owl Necklace

So the shrinky dinks are my new muse - how odd. I made my owl necklace this evening. I have never made anything like this - and I came up with the project on my own. Out of the ether and into my brain. It’s been a long time since I was awake enough to come up with a project idea AND figure out how to execute it AND follow through. This month I have done it a bunch of times. Crazy cakes. Thanks Thing-A-Day!

I have been wanting an owl necklace for awhile, but I could not find the right one. So I made one. The owl is a shrinky dink I made, and I hung it behind a magnifying glass pendant. I also decided to create a double chain. I have a bit of tweaking to do to the chain - I think I need to adjust the length. I can’t wait to wear it!

Late Day 6: sketch

I was trying to finish a book I was reading yesterday (Pillars of Earth by Ken Follett - it was very, very good), so I did a little sketch, ’cause it was quick and didn’t take any kind of preparation. It’s the first real sketch I’ve done in probably more than a year, so it kind of sucks. I based out off this photo of an owl. In retrospect, maybe I should have gone for something with a little less texture (i’ve never figured out how to draw feathers. advice anyone?), but I like owls :)

Anyway, I left my laptop at work yesterday, so I couldn’t post this till I got to work (shh! don’t tell my boss!)

Owl Gift Card Holder

owlgiftcardholder.jpg
Well, today I did everything free hand by cutting into the felt and just letting the forms emerge.  I knew I wanted to do an owl themed card holder, and today the owl came alive for me.  I even gave him a little branch to sit on.  He was a joy to make.

Day 5: Floral Whimsy Dress

Yikes, day 5 already? I cannot believe I have actually made a thing a day for five days in a row — that is crazy *smiles*

I have to keep this posting short cause I’m sick *pouts*  Here’s what I made today:

Floral Whimsy Dress ~Kreated by Kelly~

Floral Whimsy Back ~Kreated by Kelly ~

I also made this, but do not like how I chose to pleat it.  So, I will be finding someone to give this to due to its imperfections.

I also started working on this last night and then again tonight:

Feb. 5th.

Here is my thing for today! I’ve been wanting to put little jump rings on these charms I bought, becuase the ring that was on it already was to small for a necklace to fit through. The other thing I did was make a pair of earrings out of vintage pale pink buttons, and they are ADORABLE! I will sell them on etsy so a lucky someone can look extremely cute! ;-)  PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket- tracy
