and everyone was sleeping, but the mom, who was still trying to work on the nice little gifts she was going to leave out for the family to find in the morning!
So I made these magnets tonight. I have been wanting to make them for some time and just never could find an excuse. So today I printed out pictures of things my kids LOVE (yes, that would mostly be Hannah Montana and High School Musical!) and created these for them:
And then I decorated some little mailboxes (that I got a few weeks ago from the dollar spot at Target) with stickers and the new magnets:
And now the kids and I (and their dad) can leave each other nice little notes or drawings or treats or just whatever we want. I LOVE this idea and have been waiting to be able to pull these mailboxes out and use them with the kids.
I suppose this is pretty uncreative on my account, but today I made paper doll magnets from Wee Wonderfuls. So yes, that does mean that all I did was print them onto magnetic sheets and cut them out, but I’m not good with exacto knives and this was an accomplishment in itself, haha. I’m going to give them to my sister to adorn her college dorm room mini-fridge.

Today’s thing was a bit of a cheat since I had made the parts some time ago, but I didn’t assemble them until today. A few months ago, I got a one-month membership at Techshop in Menlo Park for the purpose of using their laser cutter as much as possible. I came up with a bunch of designs, haunted the scrap-acrylic bins at Tap Plastics, and had a good time. One of the things I did was cut out a lot of 8-bit computer game icons out of plastic. Something about seeing these beloved two-dimensional characters and icons of my youth extruded into the third dimension really tickles me.
One of the things I made were some cutouts of characters from a favorite Atari 800 game, Bruce Lee. I captured some graphics from the game in an emulator, isolated the characters of Bruce Lee, the Green Yamo, and two poses of the Ninja, and used the Epilog laser cutter to cut out their various parts from sheets of acrylic. These pieces have been sitting in a box since last summer, but today I finally glued them together and glued magnets to them, turning them into the fridge magnets they were always intended to be. The ninjas were in one piece, so it was just a matter of gluing a magnet to them, but Bruce Lee and the Green Yamo were made of many small shapes (some only a single pixel), which all had to be sorted and glued together.
They came out pretty well, though if you look closely, there’s a bit of glue-mess on them. I’ll do better next time. Now to re-create M.U.L.E. in acrylic plastic.

This is my first creation for my first Thing-A-Day ever:
They’re some food-themed marble magnets (click through to the Flickr page for details/notes on each magnet).
In the late hours of the last day of January, I jotted down some quick ideas for the month. I don’t feel entirely prepared, but I am excited to be exercising a bit of creativity every day outside of my regular job (I am a graphic designer by trade). Happy to jump into it and get my hands dirty!
