tough cookies

My thing for 2/27 was baking cookies. White chocolate macadamia cookies baked up to a nice browned crisp because I like a little crunch in my cookies. I went home at lunchtime and baked them so my coworkers could have hot fresh cookies as a halfway through the day/halfway through the week pick me up.

I meant to take some pictures of the baking process or at least of the finished cookies but they were so warm and crispalicious and enjoyable right out of the oven that I rushed them straight back to work and plumb forgot the whole photo thing. We finished them in a jiffy. Not a crumb left. Yum.

Thing #25: Cooking

I really ran out of steam this past week. Lol. But I’m still trying to post despite my sleeping ridiculous amounts of time lately. I think my body is trying to tell me I should be hibernating through winter.

As far as my website goes, its still a work in progress. I feel as though it’s missing a little something. My process lately has been *open file/stare/change something/stare/close/unsatisfied sigh* But admittedly, previous website designs  of mine have been a little elaborate, so recently I’ve been trying to simplify. I believe I will be able to launch it at the end of February though, so that makes me happy. Hopefully with my new blog and some business cards to boot.

Yesterday I made more curry–this time with lamb. I added in potatos, carrots, peas and corn–all served on top of Nishiki sushi style rice because its the best! And this time I remembered to take a picture before it disappeared.

My next goal is to make curry not from a box, hopefully something like this coconut chicken curry.

And speaking of cooking… my boyfriend made these the other day:

gummy bear cookies

Poor little gummy bears trapped in cookies. What a delicious way to go, though.

Feb. 26: St. Pat’s Sugar Cookies

St. Patrick's Day sugar cookies

Thanks to a great recipe from Martha Stewart, I made a batch of old-fashioned sugar cookies on some new baking boards I purchased. Her recipe calls for lemon juice and lemon zest, but I removed those two ingredients since I’m not always the biggest lemon fan. Added some St. Patrick’s Day candies on top for fun. Not too bad!

Day 16: Oatmeal Cookies

Another work from the domestic side. I made oatmeal cookies using the trusty Quaker Oats vanishing recipe, and threw in some chocolate chips and chopped pecans in place of the raisins.

I guess the recipe works, because the cookies are gone now.

Haven’t been posting…

But I have been working!

Friday my 8 year old daughter and I made polymer clay beads and baked them, then made jewelry.  Her beads came out WAY better than mine and I’m currently wearing a bracelet she made me.

Saturday, we did our cookie booth and sold 30 more boxes for her Girl Scout Troop!

Sunday, I made it a point to carve out some special time with my husband.  We snuggles on the couch, ate sushi, and watched the LOST episodes we have missed this season.  We really, really needed that.

Yesterday, my daughter and I delivered all the cookies ordered in the neighborhood.  It was a feat.  I stacked all the boxes in the stroller and strapped the baby to me in the Snugli.  We walked probably three miles that way.  It was an undertaking, to say the least, lol.  I was overly ambitious…but we did get them delivered to all but three houses!

And today I made this as a promo for my shop:

cookies and incognito laundry

I swear, I haven’t been slacking! I made belated Valentine’s cookies. They’re heart-shaped strawberry cookies, made with strawberry Nesquick.  I frosted them with chocolate frosting and used my $10 professional* cake decorating kit to write random things (mostly inside jokes between my husband and me) in cream cheese frosting. They’re super delicious. The recipe made  a million of them, so decorating a few cookies each day will probably be my “Daily Thing” until they run out.

* (I call it a professional cake decorating kit, because it uses frosting bags and random tips. That makes it professional. I could use parchment paper, but don’t wanna be precocious, now do I?)

This may have been a terrible idea. Frosting is my best friend and worst enemy. I have been eating that shit out of the can and sucking cream cheese frosting out of the application tips. I’m such a sweets junkie.

cookies!

I’ve been doing other stuff, too. Lots of home decor.

We have a half-bath downstairs that also servers as the laundry room. Our washer and dryer are old and lack visual appeal, plus, who wants to pee beside a laundry area? So we got a fairly attractive tension rod (like for a shower) and two floor-length curtains. So NOW, when visitors need to relieve themselves in our home, they’ll just THINK they’re in a full bathroom. Haha, fooled YOU!

Before - entering a seemingly normal bathroom.

After - top-secret laundry area REVEALED!

petites madeleines

Posting my Thing a Day for 2/14 a day late. My apologies; was out late last night and didn’t have time to post during the day because I was in a zombie-like state. I’d gotten up balls early to bake some madeleine cookies as a Valentine’s gift for my boyfriend:
I baked madeleines from scratch!

They were kind of tricky and I had to spend ages whipping the batter into a perfect ribbon consistency, but they actually turned out well! I was mega, mega stoked. The little, buttery shell-shaped cakes got wrapped up in a homemade gift box and delivered as fresh as possible to his work.

They actually turned out!          I packaged the cookies in a little gift box I made.

Day 11 - Sugar High

For all the cookie monsters in your house…

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup crunch peanut butter
1 cup white sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups milk chocolate chips
1/2 cup white sugar, put aside in a small bowl
Directions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cream butter, peanut butter, white sugar and brown sugar together. Beat in eggs. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix dry ingredients with the batter. Mix in chocolate chips. Roll batter into one inch balls and coat each ball by rolling it into the white sugar that was put aside. Place each ball on a baking sheet and press with a fork to make a criss cross pattern. Bake in the oven for 9-10 minutes or until the cookies begin to brown, but do not overbake.

Day 9, Day 10, Day 11

On Day 9, I baked cookies. Some heart shaped and others flower-shaped. Oh, no! There’s a cookie missing! Where could it have gone?? munch… munch…

On Day 10, I decorated them with rolled buttercream.

Today, I made this bangle bracelet. I think it looks fun.

And for my next trick, I will be making cupcakes from scratch!

DAY EIGHT - letter cookies

This weekend I have the pleasure of attending various events and performances to support my friends: USA States Dance Competition, and a friend playing Bernardo in West Side Story. I started baking cookies as their “good job” gifts, and ended up making a lot more than I had expected. I suppose these will become Valentine’s treats for my friends in the upcoming week.

I knew I wanted to make cut-out sugar cookies with lemon icing, but I wasn’t sure what shapes to use. Therefore, I ended up making small letter cookies of the initial of the cookie recipient. Lemon-y royal icing colored pale pink to be festive and bagged with a tag that says “A is for Alice” (or whatever the letter/name). They look kind of lumpy, haha.

Day 7 - Necklaces!

I sliced my hand making the day 6 bookmarks so I figured I would give it a day or two before I made things from clay. So, back to jewelery assembly. I scrounged in my Cupboard of Wonders and found a box of beads from a swap two years ago.

Kaleidoscope Bead Necklace Wood Bead Necklace

The blue kaleidoscope patterned beads are by a Dutch artist, Muriel (last name escaping me) and the ‘faux’ wood tube beads are by Bob Wiley, an artist with several articles and an appearance on the Carol Duvall Show.

Oh and my daughters says: I also made monster cookies today.

Day 7: No Worries

thing-a-day-07a.jpgI did a cleaned up version of a sketch to get it ready for coloring.  I like to call it No Worries!  This Thing-a-day is proving to be hard.  How do you guys have time for it.thing-a-day-07b.jpg I also scanned in the cover of a book I make for x-mas presents.  It was a mini recipe book to go with chocolate chip cookies in a jar (pre baked).  I was very proud of it, but now it makes me sad.  My computer was stolen so I don’t have the original file.  Sadly this is just a scan from one of the copies I borrowed from my boyfriend’s mom.
