Day 29: CD earrings, candy kill gingerbread house, and a link to my new blog

Dear Blog,
Today was a pretty good day.

I made these earrings by cutting up a cd, putting it in the microwave for a few seconds, then baking the crackly bits in the oven for a few minutes.  Drilled holes when they cooled down.

Also, my brother and I made a subversive gingerbread house for Cale’s birthday:
<– Happy house eats happy gingerbread man. Has third eye.
<–Ben was in charge of the candy kill side.
<– My side may be a little more traditional…
<– Yep.

Also, the amaryllis is getting huge!

AND I made my first sale on etsy today! Huzzah!

AND I started an alternate blog, to keep going with this thing-a-day stuff. I suspect it’ll be like a cross between thing-a-day and a photo journal. Whatever form it takes, it’ll be: colorful, illustrated, full of flash photography and a little bit tacky.
If you liked what I did this month, come check it out :-)

I’ve had a great time “getting to know you” through your crafts, you guys, and I do hope to keep in touch with some of you, and keep up with the wonderful things you are making!
Such an amazing body of work here, really.

Cheers to all, see you next year!

soon to be origami

tagged

I made some tags to put on the party favor boxes for my friend’s daughter’s b-day this weekend. She’s giving out boxes of origami paper with instructions for a few simple folds. I find the kids names, and how they differ from the names that were popular when I was young, particularly fascinating.

Birthday Party!

For February 21st, I threw myself a birthday party. I documented it poorly … probably a couple dozen folks (including me) weren’t photographed, and those that were were photographed poorly. Oh well. It was great, you had to be there, thanks to everyone who was, and extra crazy special thanks to Isa for making all kinds of wonderful food and Olivia for baking the cake!

photo album for my grandma

Today I finally got around to finishing an overdue birthday present for my grandma (88 years old). The present is a small pink photo album with far too many photos of my kids. I made her a similar photo album last summer and she liked it a lot and still carries it everywhere. Hopefully she will like this one too!

thing a day 9

My biggest creation today is a spa slumber party for my 11-year-old daughter’s birthday. The house is clean (unusual for me), the table is set, and the “spa” is ready to go.

Let the fun begin!!

04. Pop-up card

Tomorrow is my dad’s birthday. My parents’ only request are handmade birthday cards. I thought I’d do something different this time. Who doesn’t like a pop-up? I found a great tutorial on Instructables.com that includes this template print out.

lemon party

So it is finally the birthday day.. and to celebrate I made a sad little banner..

day3-a2.jpg

put together what was described as a strange lemon- rosemary bouquet from the garden (not a lot is blooming out there right now)

A sort of lemon-parsley bruschetta as an appetizer

and some pan roasted cornish game hens with fried pancetta (it was supposed to be prosciutto, but I always manage to confuse the two) and more rosemary and lemon from the garden with gravy and roasted root vegetables to go along..

The interconnecting theme of the night was me trying to utilize the fuck-ton of lemons and rosemary I found in our back yard.  I have a lemon-cakey confection in the works for the post birthday breakfast as well.

Happy birthday, mom.

Day 1: Collage Birthday Card

As I warned, I don’t have pictures right away, but will work on that this weekend.

I have however just completed my Daily Thing for today:

A birthday card for my mother. Yes, I know it is lame to be 33 and still making birthday cards for my mommy. And really, it’s not because I’m too cheap to buy one. But I still believe that something made with love means more than something store-bought. Besides, moms are not easy to shop for.

I took a piece of card stock and then used papers in shades of purple and pink to cover it with different designs, including hearts. I also used a real card for the centerpiece on the front. So it is a combination of hearts and flowers. I cut out these pretty dark purple flowers (I don’t know what they are) from my own business cards.

I wrote a little thoughtful message (on light pink paper in fuschia script) that says:

“Dear Mother,

On this and everyday I celebrate you, your support, your love, your thoughtfulness, and all that makes you a mother.

You care for everyone every day of the year, and we give you a mere two in return. So may this one, your birthday, be beautiful, bright, and all about you.”

There are also little matching slips in the collage that say:

“You never forget your mother’s kindness.”

“A mother’s love has no comparison.”

“A mother’s heart is always open.”

“You always remember your mother.”

In the lower right corner, a small decorative ribbon is affixed as a bow that closes the card.

To be honest, the idea is better than the finished product, and re-reading this attempt to explain it in words without pictures seems kinda lame. But for Day 1, I guess it is a start.

UPDATE: Here are the links to the photos on Flickr, but the pictures are terrible. I bought a small digital camera, but you can’t really make much out on these.
