One of the great things about having kids is that you can dress them however you want for the first couple years. That is, until they hit about 3 1/2 and figure out that weird hats and leg warmers are not a fashion choice that they will submit to graciously. The solution? Yes, you got it. Have another child! Which brings in my thing-a-day for today. I’ve been enjoying cignoh’s recent posts about reconstructing old clothing. So tonight, not having another project in mind, I looked in my closet for things I wasn’t wearing anymore. The first thing I found was a brand new pair of striped toe socks that I’ve never worn (because I found that my toes dislike being confined). I cut off the toes and hemmed the rough edges to give them a more finished look. They will now be a pair of baby leg warmers for my 14 month old daughter. Sucker.
My cousin liked my wrist warmers that I gave her, and thought it’d be cute for my littlest cousin to have a pair, too. She’s a newborn, but they’ll still stretch more with wear… Here are my fingers modeling them
Today, I made a pattern for the gift to our extended family’s newest addition. It’s an underwater theme that will read the new baby’s name, date of birth, weight, and length. I drew it out on graph paper.
i have always wondered if i could make these, and it turns out i can! they’re not something i’d sell on etsy or anywhere else, i think my girls will love to wear these with new spring clothes!
Well today I got up early with The Baby, and when he went down for his nap (at 7:45am!) I hurried and threw together a pair of earrings. I figured I’d better move while I had the chance. I think if I had to name them, I’d call them Seaspray b/c of the green, aqua, pale blue and clear crystals. They are very sparkly, but I am not the best photographer so you’ll have to use your imagination.
Then all the boys (The Baby, the First Grader and The Daddy) were up so I decided to cook a real breakfast. I don’t do this often, for selfish reasons. I LOVE breakfast food and it’s hard to restrain myself from overindulging. But I broke out the sausage, the eggs and got busy. I almost didn’t do this next thing. It’s just so hard to resist it. I was going to save myself and toss out the drippings and crunchy cooked on bits but I just couldn’t bear to do it–they looked up at me from the bottom of the skillet with such sad eyes. I caved and made some gravy. Oh sweet hay-soos. It was so good. I was ready to just eat it all with a spoon, straight out of the pan. But I only took a few bites. Maybe I’ll make biscuits for dinner.
Then my most favorite thing. I made the baby laugh. Well, he’s not really got the laughing part down pat but I got some super cool squeaks and squeals from him. Yes, I know my sheets are wrinkled. No, laundry will never be my forte and I don’t see ironing sheets in my future. They are at least clean, which is a miracle in itself with all the baby puke and other byproducts that this little angel produces.
We were making the bed — I say ‘we’ because I couldn’t walk out of a room without him wailing, so I’d put him on one side of the bed, work on it, then move him and work on the other. This quickly dissolved into a game of peek-a-boo with the blankets. He loved it, as you can see
I wasn’t sure if I was going to make mitts, but I decided to complete the set to go with the booties and hat. Now, I need to move on from chocolate brown….
I’m done! Weaving in the ends took the alloted time today. This blanket has a whole long story both of the giving and the knitting, which is on my blog at www.lifelearningfamily.blogspot.com. The giving part of the story is much more interesting than the knitting…
No, not a hybrid of famous country singers. A pun on “Mardi Gras”.
Ok, ok, before you groan and kick me out of the TAD club, let me just tell you that I STILL don’t feel well, and this did actually take me over a half hour to complete. And, no that’s not ALL the beads (or panties!) I got thrown at me. This amount of beads is actually the tip of the iceberg. The bulk of them are STILL in my car. And, NO, joonbugg, I didn’t show any of my naughty bits to get this stuff.
And although it is Ash Wednesday, I’m not Catholic (or any form of Christian for that matter), so I don’t have to care (or discontinue any of my excess)… I can still be in the Mardi Gras spirit if I want!
Yes, I realize that it’s kind of sad that I have to follow a pattern for something this simple, but there you have it—I am a follower of patterns. I measure most of the ingredients when I cook, too. At least I changed the yarn and colors. This square is in Moss (as in The IT Crowd). Next up: Storm (as in X-Men). I will try as hard as I can to encourage this kid to be a geek.
Well this isn’t what I had planned for today. But I’m not feeling particularly beady, and instead I took my baby outside to sit in the grass, since he’s now able to sit up. Happy Six Months, baby! I was taking lots of pics trying to get his eyes, which are just gorgeous. I love seeing light reflections in photos. Anyway, back inside with photoshop I started messing around and voila. This one pic of his eyes with a filter added was just crazy clear with the way it reflected everything. Well, clear if you know what he’s looking at. You can see the black object (Me! Does that mean I have a black soul? My shoulder is shiny! Surely that counts for something.) and the white of our porch roof, the blue sky, etc.
There’s also another pic of him being a good boy and eating his greens.
Cut and sewn a little after midnight on February 1. It will be red, dotted, crazy, dripping with ribbon, ric-rac, pockets, and buttons. (bad photo snapped with my cellphone camera..)
