Days 27 and 28

Oh man, I could officially be the last poster for thing-a-day this year. That’s either highly embarrassing or exciting. A little bit of both. Between being sick and visiting my friend in Chicago, I’ve been far behind with catching up on thing-a-day (I read them ALL and refuse to let me post my catch-up things until I’ve read them all). But, I finally finished reading them all this morning, and so my last few things…

Essentially, I bought this beautiful birdcage at target (I couldn’t resist) when I had come up with the idea to fill it with candles (including a bird one :p) and decorate it with fake flowers to give it a sort of beautiful natural wilderness look. I still am not sure if I’m done with it, I might add another flower at the top, etc… But we’ll see. I like it for now. :)

Go Read My Reflections on Thing-a-Day

I guess I could reword and repost it here, but why don’t you just head over to my own blog and read my little re-cap and requiem for Thing-a-Day 2008. And you can find out what the hell this thing is:

Thanks for a great month, everyone!

Final Day

Also Leap Day.

Saw many frogs on papers as they leap. Somehow, since the end of last year, I had been attracted to them. I am not a creature type of person at all, but I got this cute cup because of that.

kaerucup.jpg ← Cute, eh? Of course Made in Japan.

I have a feeling that the year 2008 lets me jump to a higher place in all the areas in my life. I am making baby steps, one step at a time, but these are what I had never done before.

This thing too might open another door. I quite enjoyed creating anything that came my way and also interacting with artistic people who inspired me.

What a difference a month made? Loads, actually. I no longer feel crap about the probation. I think this is a great opportunity to be close to my dream.

Here are some photos I took today. Seattle’s famous Pike Place Market. I love this place. I got purplish-pink tulips and branches of pussy willow (does anyone think about the 007 film?). It was fun to watch more tourist start coming back. I saw a bunch of cute Japanese girls in front of the first Starbucks.

It is a speaker. It acts as a microphone. It goes to an amplifier. It plays through another speaker. It hangs from the ceiling. Sometimes it makes wicked feedback.

thing 29: dog

It’s a dog. Eating from a metal bowl and then fighting with the blankets, he sounds like this.

If you’re in NYC and you’d like to meet this or other instruments-of-the-day, check this out.

I’m going to continue with the instrument building, one a week for as long as I can stand it. If you wanna keep up with the noise, bookmark or subscribe to my homepage. Thanks for putting up with the cacophony!

This is dated the 29th, but it is actually my thing for the 28th (it was just after midnight when I put the date in I guess). We get one more last one tomorrow.

Now I can find the right one

Made labels for my Spice Rack.  I know this is a silly one - especially since I printed them on my computer, but I did figure out how to feed odd size paper into my laser printer - I really have never tried this before and it opens up a lot of possibilities I hadn’t thought of before

Thing #28. Dishcloth

I made this little dishcloth for today’s thing. It knits up really quick and easy, pretty much all garter stitch. It is worked from corner to corner, so it will always be square no matter how big or small you want to make it. My mom (who has very nice hair (hi Mom!)) taught me how to make these! I just used cotton yarn, with size 6 needles. What I love most about these is that since you can always make more, it doesn’t hurt as much if you really need to toss one because it got gross!

Day 27: Dream world, Mucha dink and progress.

dreamcolor3s

(Click for larger)

This is a map of the place I always go in my dreams (not an island, just not fully colored yet).
Just playing with coloring it in here.

Also, I:
Made a shrinky dink:

based on a Mucha… it got weird and cloudy around the edges, not sure why. Also, it was a circle but it got deformed so i tried to cut it with scissors after it was shrunk… and it splintered a lot.  I’ll try again.

ALSO, I Printed owl cards!
I’ll take em to school to use the super duper paper cutter tomorrow.
They’re black prints of drawings on cream cardstock. Does that sound ok, or too plain? I’m kind of thinking about printing on fancier paper, then applying that to cardstock. Hmmmph. Today was one of those days where you get really caught up in all the possibilities and it starts to get in the way of actually moving forward.
Worked a lot on an animation, but fruitlessly, as I could not get the *&%#ing turbulence feild to effect the grass. It was probably just a glitch, but I lost patience. Yarg.

Only 2 more days after this? Is there a year long thing-a-day? This has been so satisfying.

Quilt Hangers

I have this quilt from my grandmother-in-law that I keep meaning to hang, but I didn’t have any quilt hangers until the other day.  I stumbled upon some unfinished ones, and decided this morning that some black paint is just what they needed.

  quilthangers.jpg

It’s not the best paint job, but people won’t be looking too close at them.  They’ll be looking at the quilt instead.

And speaking of painting, my paper beads are drying faster than expected.  I let them out for some sunshine in the afternoon and hopefully they’ll be dry enough by tomorrow to start painting.

I made a decoration for my car! I found this clear cd packaged with a bunch of recordable/rewriteable cds I bought. I’m not sure why they felt compelled to include a clear cd, but I decided I might as well do something creative with it. I used sharpies, elastic wire, stickers, and a quote from On the Road< by Jack Kerouac.

So you can see it better, against paper.

“…because the only people that interest me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones that never yearn or say a commonplace thing… but burn, burn, burn like roman candles across the night.” - Jack Kerouac

Thing #27. Shirt + Bleach

This is the first thing that I’ve made this month that I don’t like. I tried to use a paintbrush to apply bleach to this black t-shirt. In my head, it was supposed to come out all whimsical and pretty, but I think that it just looks blobby and strange. I actually think it looks cooler in the pictures than it does in person. I’ll still wear it around the house and stuff though - it’s still functional. The one cool part is that some of the bleach bled through to the back of the shirt, and it looks pretty neat (and I just now realized I didn’t take any pictures of that!)

Fireplace Blanket

The wind has been blowing very strongly this winter - so I made a blanket for the opening.  It is held in place with strategically placed magnets and filled with fiberfill.  A little bit of quilting and we have wind protection for those days when we don’t want a fire.
