I made some tags to put on the party favor boxes for my friend’s daughter’s b-day this weekend. She’s giving out boxes of origami paper with instructions for a few simple folds. I find the kids names, and how they differ from the names that were popular when I was young, particularly fascinating.

Wow, what a month it’s been! I’ve really discovered a love of papercraft that I didn’t even know I had. Today I was going to make a whole bunch of medieval buildings, since I bought the Vyllage-on-the-Cheep Sampler Set, hoping to use it with some eventual D&D game. But I ran out of time and only got one building done. I also made some crates that will work with my Old West game.

I also made one of those Gardner dragon optical illusions that seems to follow you around the room (see how it works here). Spooky!

I’ve also enjoyed making all the arcade papercraft models I’ve made over the course of this month. Here’s a big picture of all ten of them in my office at work!

Thing-A-Day has been a great process. I’ve loved making things every day together with Jocelyn. Let’s hope that I can keep it up! Making these papercraft models is lots of fun so I think I’ll keep doing it.

Well, tonight, I finally finished it. It has sapped all my creativity for today, so I’m going to have to leave things there.

On reflection, I’m really pleased I was involved in this project; I’ve tried out lots of new things, taken on a few challenges and surprised myself. I’ve finished this month a little more confident in my sketching abilities and addicted to knitting!

Can’t wait for next year!

Today is supposed to be the last day of Thing-a-Day and I am about a week behind. I have been working on stuff, though. These are wedding invitation prototypes for Cory & Natalie’s wedding in August. For about a month now we’ve been wishy-washying back and forth from “maybe I’ll do them” to “I guess I’m doin’ ‘em!” to vague ideas about colors and squares vs. rectangles, to proper wording, to scouring etsy.com and finestationery.com for inspiration, to whether it will be more summer-ish or more fall-ish in Berkeley in mid-late-August and what that means for shades of green. . .
And after about 50 or so e-mails later, I finally came up with these two prototypes:

Thing 21 - Prototype 1

and Thing 22 - Prototype 2

We’ve gone back and forth on these a couple of times and there are still some changes to make, but I think we are approaching a final decision soon. soon. soon!

Recently I discovered an old Avalon Hill game from 1982, Gunslinger. I’ve played it a few times now with my friends and it’s been great (and I did an episode of my podcast about it). When I found out about it, I didn’t have a copy of the game, but people have helpfully scanned in all the rules, counters, and cards, and we’ve been able to simulate the all-important 108-card deck of Result Cards with computer programs –we’ve tried an Excel spreadsheet macro I got online and a Perl script that I wrote. Both work pretty well, but don’t give the same visceral thrill as drawing a card to see if you hit someone else with your shot.

So, I bought a used copy of the game from eBay, and in our last game, we used the actual result cards. These worked okay, but they’re small cards that are not particularly well-designed. I had already redesigned the action cards, the counters, and the weapon cards, so why not design replacement result cards?

So I’ve now set to out re-create all 108 result cards. Mine are in color and are easier to read than the originals. I don’t have all of them done yet, but here are some of them:

Once the full deck of 108 is complete, I’ll upload it to BoardGameGeek like I did with my action cards, and then I’ll print them all out on cardstock and cut them out for use with my gaming group.

i like russian poster style, and lately i’ve been wanting to draw a giant squid, because someone at work had a cool sweatshirt with some on it. but i opted for an octopus, and decided to mash it up with the russian poster thing. i’m not sure if the green takes away from the russian feeling, but i like the result anyway. long live the sharpie! i also like that octopusses have so many legs, and the russian text on the drawing translates into “Our strengths are uncountable.”

and so they are…

My paper beads were dry enough today to paint so I decided to try a few experiments with the colors. I started three separate groups of them, two of which were metallic color paints (solid copper and silver splashes on a black background) and the other group being a Spring pink and green. The metallic ones seem to have taken on an outer space feel to them for some reason, and Adam said the pink and green beads reminded him of colored marshmallows from Lucky Charms or crunchberries from Captain Crunch.

I began the day all ready to make more sunprints - this time using the leaves from the tree where I got the flowers and pods last time. I have decided a set of 3 window panes would make a lovely display and was thrilled to have /easily/ found more cyanotype paper yesterday. I was waiting a bit until the sun was in a similar place in the sky to ensure the light throw would be similar, then the cable guy came to fix my internet and then the fog rolled in. Foiled!

I worked some on my Inspirational Reminders book - printing out some words I want to have in the book to match some sayings I bought at Paper Source. To continue the color them of turquoise and red, the only colors in the book will be those two so I will print this again in red ink on my color printer at work - the black and white version in the photo below.

I want to include a rotating list of creative projects to work on so decided to use photo corners for the list so I can switch it out as I finish things. When I went to use the white ones I have on hand, however, my artists persnickety nature kicked in and they just wont do. I will pick up either red or turquoise photo corners this weekend. I did cut some red and turquoise nice paper to have stored in a little envelope for future lists.

With this paper corner decision, I think I will also use the photo corners to mount the sayings instead of glue as well so I can have a whole set of sayings and switch them out as desired. I like the idea of an evolving book that changes over time and with my mood. By the way, there is also an imagine saying which was hiding under the book. A stagnant book would just become a display; this way, I think I will come back to it often to assess what I need to see and hear from myself and change it at any time.

Lastly, I received my foil paper for the black Magritte book just now. I haven’t had a chance to open it yet but I am very excited to explore it. I have some more black books on order so that will be a project for March.

It didn’t seem like I did much today but in actuality, lots of creative plans were made, some actual work was done and as Thing a Day draws to a close, I feel like I have several projects in the works I am looking forward to completing.

I also turned my winter time display

into a spring time one.

(Which I just realize continue the color theme of red and blue…)

I’ll take em to school to use the super duper paper cutter tomorrow.
They’re black prints of drawings on cream cardstock. Does that sound ok, or too plain? I’m kind of thinking about printing on fancier paper, then applying that to cardstock. Hmmmph. Today was one of those days where you get really caught up in all the possibilities and it starts to get in the way of actually moving forward.
Worked a lot on an animation, but fruitlessly, as I could not get the *&%#ing turbulence feild to effect the grass. It was probably just a glitch, but I lost patience. Yarg.

Only 2 more days after this? Is there a year long thing-a-day? This has been so satisfying.

This is the last of the 80s arcade game papercraft models from Way of the Rodent. If I want any more, I’ll have to make my own.

Today’s two arcade games are Robotron: 2084 and Gravitar. I don’t know very much about Gravitar — it was not a game I ever recall seeing or playing. Looks like it was a vector-graphics game that turned out to be the inspiration for Oids, which is an old Mac game that I did play a lot of. Robotron, on the other hand, is an old friend. It’s one of my favorites and I’d still play it today. That dual-joystick control and fast-and-furious action, plus the great sound effects, make it a classic. Thank you, Eugene Jarvis.

Both of these models were pretty simple to construct, though Gravitar has a much more complicated cabinet. I ended up gluing one part wrong and having to rip it apart and re-glue it, though it’s in a hard-to-see spot and it’s not really noticeable.

I can’t post what I did here because I’m not sure if it’s okay to post an essay from my pending application on the internet. So I want to play it safe. I submitted my college application for Colorado College (as a transfer applicant) on the 26th, and so decided to use that for my thing-a-day considering I had just finished edits on several rather creative essays that were required for it. Basically, I was asked to detail and design my own class. I had a lot of fun doing it. Those on the lj thingaday08 community should be able to see it though, friends locked.

I’ve been thinking about some ways to creatively wrap packages, using some of the charming tags I scored from etsy. I like the slightly old-fashioned and simple look of brown paper very much. Yesterday, when I had some free time to think, I settled on what I wanted to do. After school today JT and I stopped by Michaels’s to see if they had what I was looking for. Bingo.

I am a sucker for stripes and polka dots. Put them on $1 ribbon and I’m in. So tonight I made a card and wrapped up a package with my new supplies. The picture doesn’t really do the package justice; I think it turned out very nicely. And everyone loves to receive a package in the mail, so I’ve got that in my corner.
