Loom Knit Things (photo-heavy)

I’m making something every day, but I’ve decided A) I can’t possibly post every day and B) there are some things (sketches, crappy paintings, etc) that I do not wish to share with the public. So I’m just going to post things in batches whenever I am up for it. If this is contrary to the spirit of Thing-A-Day, I’m sorry, but it’s what I can manage. (Typing is very hard for me, as I have arthritis in my fingers; as a result posting and describing photos and dealing with Flickr and all of that is hard to do.)

So, some of the things I have made in the past week:
Lagoon Legwarmer

Lagoon Legwarmer. This one was meant to be a daily thing, but wound up taking twelve hours over two days. I did a crappy watercolour (I am new to watercolour) to catch up, but I am sooo not showing you that. I’ve posted about this on my blog already if you want more details.

Project Superstar

Superstar Base Hat

Superstar base hat: A child’s hat made for a very special young lady who is going to undergo chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant in a few weeks and who is behind Project Superstar which raises money for a charity. This hat is pretty boring on its own, which is why I made this to go with it:

Superstar

Superstar “Hair”: This is a headband with lots of yarn attached to sort of look like Muppet hair. Unfortunatley I don’t have a hat dummy to show you, it makes more sense when not laid flat.

Together they look like this:
Superstar Set

I decided to make her another hat, but as I never use patterns I had to figure out the right texture and size which meant I had to do what knitters hate: Make a gauge swatch. Or more accurately, about four of them. It took so long I decided that surely must count for a thing a day. They all got ripped out (I hate wasting yarn, especially yarn that is soooo hard to get in my country), but the final one looked like this:
Fraggle hat -- detail

Having got my gauge, the next day I made the hat itself.

Fraggle hat for Marian

Alas, making a light box was something I did later in the week, so this photo is somewhat dark.  Anyway, it’s based on a design I saw on the internet, made up in a pretty, soft, and most importantly machine-washable yarn.

I hope she likes the hats :)

If anyone can help me find sources of Lion Brand Yarn in the UK (I know of one, but am looking for more that might be cheaper), PLEASE let me know.  With a bone marrow transplant she can only have stuff that is machine washable, but she has sensitive skin and the scalp is some of the most sensitive anyway so Lion Brand is the best so far at hitting all of the marks.  I only had that one yarn in my personal stash so I’m now on the lookout for more Suede yarn and ideally some Homespun too.

I have now typed way more than my  fingers can handle, so I guess it’s back to knitting! Next time I shall have beading and felt to show, so until then, adieu!

Photos from days 2-5: Loom knitting and ugly art

Well, I am doing much better at making things than at photographing, blogging and commenting! Hopefully I shall get all caught up on them all soon. Meanwhile, here are the photos…

Ragdoll armwarmers Detail of Ragdoll Armwarmers

Days 2 and 3: Ragdoll armwarmers (one per day)

Part of a set of accessories I’ve been working on for a few weeks; these came out more substantial than fingerless gloves. (And I meant for them to be worn over gloves anyway, my hands get extremely cold.) Loom knit using knifty knitter round blue loom.

Eyeblinding spin art

Day 4: Ugly Spin Art

Meant as part of the card for a friend (mentioned in my wee poem entry on day one). Using a spin painting toy — fun but ugly :) (I was feeling especially unwell that day so didn’t have time for much. The card took about fifteen seconds to make, setting up all of the gear and getting the paint ready took more than fifteen minutes :/)

Baby Mohawk hat

Day 5: Baby mohawk hat

Made for a friend’s baby on the knifty knitter red loom in a k2p2 rib (loom knit) with added fringe.

Two, or One-Half

[This seems to have failed to post yesterday, sorry!]

I made one fingerless mitten today but it eems a bit odd to photograph just the one so I shall wait until I finish its mate tomorrow.

In other news, insomnia continues to ruin my world. Film at 11.

End of Insomnia Week

Well, I got the second fingerless glove done just under the wire but I am actually tired for a change after a week totally wrecked by insomnia so instead of staying up to take pics and edit and upload and all that, I am going to SLEEP!

Pics tomorrow, promise.

In the meantime, enjoy your sleep while you can!

A wee poem

This is not at all what I had planned, and far earlier in the day, but I was laying awake with insomnia (my theme of the week, I guess :P (See my blog for proof)

I’m about to send a birthday present off to a friend who shares my love of silly, whimsical things and I thought I’d make a card (not made yet).  Then I decided to make a crappy art piece to go in it (not made yet) and  hype it up as if it was the real present.  Anyway, the card and art thing will come this weekend, but the message I have done, and I’m calling it my Thing-a-Day for Feb 1 :)

It’s just a silly little poem muchly inspired by Dr. Seuss… (oh and for the Britslang challenged, larf=laugh).  This is what I get up to when I’m sleep deprived!

Another Londoner

Hey all!  I’m really psyched for this — so much that I made two things today as I just couldn’t wait to get started!  I’m going to be doing some beading, card making, ATC backgrounds, wet and needle felting, loom knitting, yarn painting, trying out new food recipes and maybe more as I have at least another half a dozen crafts that I dabble with.  I’m also going to try to to go to craft get togethers (mostly knitting as that’s  what we have a lot of here) at least twice a week during this period.

I’m having two problems so far: one is that I have no idea how to deal with themes.  My stuff is so diverse that I can’t really imagine having a particular theme on a weekly basis.  How is everyone else handling this?

The second is photography: London weather sucks this time of year so the chances of seeing the sun are pretty slim.  I’m going to try to build a cheap lightbox/light tent this weekend, but  I’m still a bit worried that I won’t be able to get good photographs every single day.

On the bright side, I’m going out tomorrow on a big excursion to stock up on supplies so I don’t have to worry about it during February.   Three cheers for powershopping! :)  I’m disabled and sometimes can’t leave the bed let alone the apartment so I want to be sure that I have all of my supplies on hand so that I don’t have t forgo a project for lack of a little thing.

Anyway, if you want to know more about me and my crafting, you can check out my blog at http://thesickchick.wordpress.com

Happy crafting!
