Day 29: CD earrings, candy kill gingerbread house, and a link to my new blog

Dear Blog,
Today was a pretty good day.

I made these earrings by cutting up a cd, putting it in the microwave for a few seconds, then baking the crackly bits in the oven for a few minutes.  Drilled holes when they cooled down.

Also, my brother and I made a subversive gingerbread house for Cale’s birthday:
<– Happy house eats happy gingerbread man. Has third eye.
<–Ben was in charge of the candy kill side.
<– My side may be a little more traditional…
<– Yep.

Also, the amaryllis is getting huge!

AND I made my first sale on etsy today! Huzzah!

AND I started an alternate blog, to keep going with this thing-a-day stuff. I suspect it’ll be like a cross between thing-a-day and a photo journal. Whatever form it takes, it’ll be: colorful, illustrated, full of flash photography and a little bit tacky.
If you liked what I did this month, come check it out :-)

I’ve had a great time “getting to know you” through your crafts, you guys, and I do hope to keep in touch with some of you, and keep up with the wonderful things you are making!
Such an amazing body of work here, really.

Cheers to all, see you next year!

Day 28: Owl cards!

Finally! Figured out how to print nicely and cut in a straight line ;-)

Not-so-shameless plug (hey, you’ve been asking!): These are freshly posted in my etsy, if you’re interested.
(molliefabric.etsy.com)

I can’t believe this is the last day! I’ll post one more thing tonight (this post is for yesterday).
Thing-a-day really got me goin! I’m feeling so… useful haha

Seriously though, is there a year round community for this? I want to keep going. I guess I could start my own blog, but having a community to interact with would be way better! Does anyone know? I cant find any info about it on the thing-a-day site.

Day 27: Dream world, Mucha dink and progress.

dreamcolor3s

(Click for larger)

This is a map of the place I always go in my dreams (not an island, just not fully colored yet).
Just playing with coloring it in here.

Also, I:
Made a shrinky dink:

based on a Mucha… it got weird and cloudy around the edges, not sure why. Also, it was a circle but it got deformed so i tried to cut it with scissors after it was shrunk… and it splintered a lot.  I’ll try again.

ALSO, I Printed owl cards!
I’ll take em to school to use the super duper paper cutter tomorrow.
They’re black prints of drawings on cream cardstock. Does that sound ok, or too plain? I’m kind of thinking about printing on fancier paper, then applying that to cardstock. Hmmmph. Today was one of those days where you get really caught up in all the possibilities and it starts to get in the way of actually moving forward.
Worked a lot on an animation, but fruitlessly, as I could not get the *&%#ing turbulence feild to effect the grass. It was probably just a glitch, but I lost patience. Yarg.

Only 2 more days after this? Is there a year long thing-a-day? This has been so satisfying.

Day 26: character development, yet more owls, and a 3D assignment.

Doodling a character for an animation. Little Indian girl, still needs a name.

(I’m rusty with people and faces, so this was a good exercise)

Other doodles:
<– Mole men in the office
<– Large owls
<–Small owls
<– Gerbil powered solar system model

And this is my 3d assignment for tomorrow, playing with dynamics. It’s nothin’ special, but it’s not a big assignment:

Day 25: ETSY SHOP is finally UP!

http://www.molliefabric.etsy.com

Woo hoo
Offerings are meager, as I just opened it up about an hour ago, but expect more items in the near future!!
For now it’s mustaches galore, but soon it will be: cards, prints, journals, shrinky dink jewelry… pretty
much anything I can draw on :-)
So it’ll be worth it to check back soon!

Also, here’s a photo of the lovely amaryllis my mom gave me at christmas- finally blooming!

My window garden has grown too large for the window and is now overflowing onto the kitchen counters…table… chair…
Good news is it’s suddenly spring so I can start putting em outside soon.

Also, thank you guys for all the kind words! It really made my day!

Day 23:
Shrinky Dinks (hee)
First try: WTF!? I don’t even know how this happened…

as you can see, it shrunk MOSTLY but a huge circular bubble remained large? Hm. This stuff is made for kids, right? I must be over thinking it.

Round two was a little more successful:

lard cat, paisley and a giraffe pegasus, of course.

Failure: little da vinci and doug funny mouth curled a lot.
Success: Droplet full of bunnies.

Day 18: Not a plot line so much as a drawing?

I have an idea, for a video. I won’t speak too loudly about it quite yet, I don’t want to scare it away :-)
It’s about the way people effect each other, and the operation/expectations of the omniscient narrator.
Innocence, honesty, hardness, exploitation, stupidity, curiosity, awareness.

Some inspiration:
Rules of Attraction- The general flow of people
Wristcutters (a love story)- The simultaneously attractive/dismal dream state
Even Midgets Started Small- Isolation, the study of a fringe population
Gummo- ditto
Achewood (an online comic)- Paranoia, self awareness, the aspect of audience and preformance

(PS: It really does fit into all the categories I checked, I’m not lyin!)

(I’m going for it! Still cleaning up images for prints.)

Also, this is technically from two days ago, but for good measure here’s something that took a little more time:

This is a close up of a much larger image…I’ve got a bunch of compositions using the same woman, but most look way better blown up so you can really see the moire patterns

Day 13: Shark Tower Done, and Some RL Flying WC

I can’t believe I saw this.

And I finished the SHARK TOWER! project proposal animation:

So. It’s an aquarium in a skyscraper.
You access it by elevator, and are completely surrounded on 3 sides by tons of water, and sharks.
The aquarium spans two buildings and is connected by a transparent skywalk/water bridge.
Pedestrians can walk between the two buildings on top of the aquarium layer, and look down at sharks… and past… hundreds of feet to the street.

Everyone’s reading environmental themes out of this animation (water level rising… displacing animals/placing them into our spaces…) but I’m more interested in looking up from my work desk, out my window, and into a building full of sharks.

Grant writing time.

Day 12: Shark Tower (in progress)

Posting now cause I’m screwed for time later tonight.

Here are some screenshots of my in progress 3D project.

It’s a sky scraper aquarium.

Cause, you’re working in your office downtown… you look out the window… you could either be staring at the
people in the building next to you… or … sharks.

Day 10: Daphne + Apollo (2d/3d OHprojector sculpture)

It’s a 3d tree sculpture that sits on an overhead projector to cast a 2d shadow image of Daphne fleeing from Apollo.
(Daphne was turned into a tree to avoid being captured and wedded by Apollo)
Inspired by Bernini’s Daphne and Apollo, which is a sculpture that aims to capture the process of metamorphosis in a three dimensional object (Daphne appears to metamorphose as the viewer walks around the statue).
Similarly, this sculpture offers different information depending on the direction it is viewed from.

(Above) The whole system
(Below) Close up of the shadow

Thoughts:
-It’d be better if the sculpture had enough detail/finish to stand on its own as an interesting art object, and didn’t rely on the overhead projection to be a complete interesting spectacle.
-Utilize the different shadow/depth layers available within the tree (right now the figures are shaped only from roots so there’s no variance in shadow clarity).
-Up complexity…  and play around with cellophane/transparent leaves.
-Maybe give viewer a chance to look at the tree sculpture as JUST a 3d object (with the OHP off)  before turning on the light/projection/interesting part.

Any suggestions? I have to present this tomorrow so I’m still working on it…

Day 8: Photojournal (Obamarama)

Photo 1: Despite the ailment, I got out of bed early this morning to head downtown to see Obama speak.
Holy crap! Does Seattle support Obama!  The bus downtown from our district (which is not a very busy line) was packed tight! And as we made our way downtown the bus driver had to skip half the stops because there was simply no more room on board.
Tons of photos of that- plan to make a stop motion of the fluid dynamics of the crowd, but haven’t yet.
Here’s one though– it’s a picture of the people left outside after Key Arena reached capacity (about 3000 I hear)… squishing up against the windows still trying to get in.

Photo 2: Imminent doom. Saw this walking home from the Obamarama. Take what you want from it.

Photo 3: Always bargain. Also speaks for itself hah

I’d say that sums up my day pretty well!
