Thing 17: A Jumbo Vinyl Pouch

Good for holding stuff. It’s about 10″ x 8″. Vinyl is tough to work with and the manufacturing of it is terrible for the environment. I bought this vinyl second hand, so at least it won’t be going to the landfill.

Oh, recognize the little quilt block on the front? wink.

I’ve been sick, so time for bed.

That’s right, it’s lined too!

Thing 16: Another Quilt Block, No special kind

If you look at my next “thing” post, you’ll understand why this block is under clear vinyl. Of course the colors look totally off in this photo! Ugh!!

Thing 15: Log Cabin Quilt Block Made of Ribbons

This is an improvised log cabin quilt block that I made with various ribbons. It’s about 4 inches square. Not sure what I’ll do with it yet….probably add it to another project. The photo doesn’t do the nice bright colors justice.

Things 13 and 14: Coasters

Here are 2 things, so I’m counting them as thing 13 and thing 14. They are coasters! I made them with some groovy vintage fabric scraps and a heavy-weight, double-sided fusible interfacing called fast2fuse. The extra stitching throughout the coasters makes them nice and firm. Now they will go on my coffee table.

Thing 12: Stringing of Fabric Beads

Gotta come clean on this one: I made these fabric beads over a year ago. What I accomplished this evening, however, is stringing some of them together. It took longer than it looks. Really!

This Thing-A-Day challenge is busting my humpus.

Thing 11: A Self-Portrait Valentine for My Sweetie

Not much to say about this except that the resemblance was rendered masterfully.

Thing 10: A Freezer Paper Stencil Heart

Freezer paper is a great quilter’s secret. You can cut out shapes from it and iron them onto fabric, where they will stick temporarily. This is a handy way to create a stencil for fabric painting. I made a heart stencil for Valentine’s Day and used a rubber stamp ink pad that works on fabric.

Thing 9: Vintage Fabric Covered Jar Lid

I found this idea in Martha Stewart Living magazine. Yes, I’m a big fan. No shame in that game!

The fabric is vintage—I have a massive collection. The jar is full of yo-yos that I’ve made over the past year.

Okay, that’s 3 things for one day. I’m catching up, people.

Thing 8: Pincushion Stack

I found the idea and pattern for this in a quilting magazine last December. My execution is a little wonky. Oh well!

Thing 7: A Coat in Progress

This is a coat that I’ve been working on since November. It’s a bit beyond my sewing skills, so I’ve had a lot of help. I’m using a ribless brown corduroy with a 1930s reproduction print cotton for the bias binding. Ribless corduroy is tough to work with! It moves around a lot.thingaday_7.jpgDon’t worry, it’s not sleeveless! Here’s the pattern from Sandra Betzina,   as featured by Vogue.thingaday_7b.jpg

Thing 6: Another sticker!

thingaday_6.jpgI made another sticker for my thing-a-day thing. This one took longer because I cut out the shape. Tomorrow, no more stickers.

Thing 5: Stickers!

thingaday_5.jpgMy thing 5 is stickers. I know I’m late, so I made several. These are images that I cut out of vintage magazines, coloring books, and school books. I made them using a Xyron sticker maker. Good times.

Thing 4: A patch

thingaday_4a.jpgThis is a patch. I made it by scanning some art from a vintage children’s book and printing it onto iron-on transfer paper. (You can buy it at craft stores.) I ironed the art onto some fabric which I then sewed onto this little case. I’m going to use the case to hold spools of thread and bobbins when I’m on the go.thingaday4b.jpg

Day 3: Calendar Page for March

This is part of a do-it-yourself mini calendar that I have been creating for my significant other since December of last year. It was a Christmas present. Here is my page for the month of March. 9 more pages to go . . . Sorry for the crapola photo.thingaday_3.jpg

This is really for Day 2: a make-up bag

thingaday_2a.jpgI started putting together this make-up bag in a sewing class at Stonemountain and Daughter Fabrics in Berkeley YESTERDAY, but was too tired to post it last night. Lame, I know. But here it is anyway. I am showing 2 photos b/c although the outside looks pretty good, the inside has a big boo-boo. Not sure what went wrong, but not too surprised b/c I’m always making dumb mistakes like this when I sew and having to employ my over-worked seam ripper.Rip it, rip it good! thingaday_2b.jpg

These are yo-yos. Also known as granny circles. Quilters and needle artists like to make these with their fabric scraps.Word.
