valentines!

valentines.jpgmicvalentine.jpg

The big heart valentine reads “your backside isn’t love…” on the putside and “but I LOVE your backside!” on the inside. I made it for my friend Kat because we enjoy making each other laugh. It’s also a reference to an Excel Saga song.

The lamb is for Kyrian, who promised to ta

patterns and a brochure cover

Well, since I can’t sleep anyway, I figured I’d post some MORE Thing-a-Days in my frantic race to catch up.

When I am outside, I often notice pretty geometric shapes or interesting architectural angles… here are three semi-abstract photos - unedited - of patterns I saw. The images are of tire tracks, snow on a half-way preventing erosion on an upraised dirt parking lot, and a drain.

Also I will include a pic of the front of the “about me” brochure I designed today!

i’m back

Traveling for work and a death in the family (rest in peac grandpa) kept me away from this for about a week. I don’t want to give up, though…I figured that maybe I can cheat and make up for the lost week by doing several things a day. Today I did three; I will share two but not the third (a brochure about me for a PR class — my first experience with Publisher!) because it’s got my contact info all over it.

For now, though… a PhotoShopped version of a photo I took this afternoon. I call it “Impatience.”

imaptience2.jpg

And a poem, also about impatience for spring. (If you couldn’t tell, the above picture was of a shrub that budded prematurely — actually several weeks ago, I’ve been watching it — against the snow.)

this poem is called “honeysuckle”.

i noticed a place where the sidewalk ended
unexpectedly today.

the concrete yielded to a thin dirt path
scattered with pebbles
and the bones of trees;

it was covered in snow
and a layer of ice,
but underneath it all i saw
honeysuckle petals.

how long until spring sets them free?

i ask this,
and in the small blue hours before dawn,
songbirds start to herald the coming of
the sun.

chaos (fixed i think :))

Last night my coworkers and I got caught in a belt of severe weather on our drive to Louisville. Flash floods, blinding rain, and out-of-control winds forced us to pull over at the nearest exit. Eventually it got so bad that we fled our car and huddled in a nearby gas station… here is the view we had at about 1 a.m. this morning.

It’s not a great photograph, I know, but I like how it captures the chaos and panic of what was going on around us. Note the garbage bag being sucked out of the trash can, whose lid has blown away.hpim3773.JPG

It’s a jungle in there!

Self-portrait as a faerie

This is a photo of me wearing a flower crown I made in the Spanish country-side… someone told me I looked like a nymph and thus I made myself into a faerie! :) It’s cut awkwardly because I failed at the other half. And because it’s artsier that way. Haha. ;P

vietnamese food!

I made Vietnamese spring rolls and pho bo with a housemate and a friend. Yummmmmmmm!

Wish we hadn’t annihilated all the spring rolls in an hour…

And yes,  my housemates and I painted that ridiculous “Rock Lobster”-themed table as well. ;)

A Map of My Soul

When I was enrolled in Design 230 (Intro. to Design for Non-Majors) at Ohio State, we often tackled problems by “mapping” them out with visual imagery. We not only mapped problems, contexts, and solutions, but also the personalities of our intended users. I decided to map myself as an introductory post. :)

A bit about the process ’cause this is really abstract: I created this image in PhotoShop CS2 by using only images I already had saved on my computer. I figured it would be more truthful that way because the images I keep on my computer reflect things that I like and want to have around me. I think you’ll notice pretty quickly that there are some obvious themes in the images I’ve posted here… if I did this correctly you should be able to learn a lot about my personality within a second of looking at it. I didn’t pick these themes intentionally… I just let my instincts guide me and dragged and dropped images with rapid-fire speed. I made sense of it visually afterwards.

Sorry if this image is huge for you… I have a crazy 19-inch monitor.

A Map of My Soul

Can you guess anything about my personality by looking at this? :)

I was going to write about the themes in this image but I think it’d be more fun to see if YOU can tell me what you see in this!

I’d just like to add for the sake of ethics that most of these images were taken randomly from the Internet. One photo is from a friend (the flamenco dancer from Salamanca, Spain - I saw this show in person with him!) and two of them (the railroad in Moab, Utah and the circle of candles on the altar) are my own. The pink-and-purple faerie is art by Amy Brown, one of my current favorite artists; you can check out more neat faeries at http://www.amybrownart.com. CLAMP drew the Clover art (the girl with robotic wings on the green backdrop) and the short-haired angel in the Spanish icon is art from the anime Haibane Renmei. All of the small 100 x 100 squares are LiveJournal icons I created; many of them feature unknown artists, so I’m sorry I can’t tell you what they are from. Feel free to tell me if you know.

Now it’s time for a nap… this post was way too long. Expect some stick figures or something tomorrow. ;P
