Today was WonderCon in SF, which I stopped by on a whim and was thoroughly underwhelmed by. One aisle of Alternative Press Expo packs in about 10 times more interesting work, I’d say.

Right now, I’m fighting off a migraine brought on by the rainy weather. UGH.

A little scene today, instead of the usual mish-mash of faces. The guy came out first, and Batman (a la Darwyn Cooke) came second, by way of non-explanation. I am happy with how gnarly this naked man looks.

I fell asleep while drawing in bed last night, after a looooong, busy week at work. I was i) very hungry and ii) checking out our Warren Magazines CREEPY poster across the room. Here is the result:

Weird stuff today as the brush pens I bought on January 31 are running out of ink and drying up. I have been sitting down at 8PM and drawing for 30 minutes straight for the past few days. Sometimes this formal taskmastering leads to really mundane junk, but I was actually pleased today with what came out. Who knows?

I’m happily back on track with my Things-A-Day. Except, I was looking at Tezuka’s Adolf again and got struck by a few different takes on how he does fury and melancholia.

DAY 16: DREAM DATE, DROOL DATE, DARK LORD, TAIYO MATSUMOTO, BONER GHOST, etc.

I was staring at some photocopies of pages from Osamu Tezuka’s epic Phoenix series, and hurriedly copied this robot design shape for today’s Thing. His 12-volume Phoenix story depicts literally anything or any place that you’d ever want to learn to draw. He is my illustration Jesus.[media: sakura sumibrush pen, kimberley pencil, disneyland autograph book](PS: You can also see Tezuka’s Adolf vol. 1 on my shelf if you look closely)    UPDATE: I was feeling productive, so I did a version 2 (version 1 was scrawled on a napkin a few months ago) of a 4-panel gag comic I wrote for the back page of comic strips for my zine. I need to find someone (AHEMcalvin?derek?sophia?AHEM) to do the final version and get the visual preciseness just right. 

This is probably my least favorite Disneyland autograph book page so far, but today was busy, busy all day. In good news, I bought two tickets to Japan for my gf and I for a vacation in April!  SO EXCITING. DAY 14: ARMS, TREES, DOGS, GOBLINS, and an IDIOTIC BIRD [media: sakura foam sumibrush, zebra small brush pen]

DAY 10: I stole this directly from an issue of UNLOVEABLE. I re-read all of Esther Pearl Watson’s comics this weekend and was reminded of how much I love her work. I wish I could draw like her naturally– her aesthetic is so right on!

Finally recovered and getting back to work on projects. From here on out, I’m limiting myself to a page of sketches a day in the Disneyland Autograph Book. Not as ambitious as I’d first hoped, but it sets a nice time limit for each day that I think I’ll be better able to keep.

I’m trying to catch up after being out of commission with food poisoning for 3 days. I managed to eat stuff finally, so I thought I’d get retroactively active here.

This is not NEW, but I made this as an XMAS gift for a friend (per his request, I swear). It just came back to me after being marked undeliverable in the mail twice. Hand-cut the stencils and then crappily screen-printed on an American Apparel wallet by me:

I’m down in Anaheim for a work trip, and somehow managed to get food poisoning. I haven’t left my bed in over 8 hours, and feel like I’ve been getting my ass kicked by an invisible hand all day. And I didn’t even get to go into Disneyland at all, which was the point of this whole stupid trip!

UGH. UGH. UGH

There you have it– no new sketches from me until tomorrow, if all goes well. This sucks.
