In few words: I'm a 39-year old wanna-be writer and crafter in Hilton, NY. I enjoy writing short stories, poetry, essays, etc., and love working with paper, fabric, beads, etc. creating crafts. I am married with 3 kids, two of whom are still at home (15 and 16 years old). And I'm lucky, because my husband supports my crafting habit!

Yesterday’s thing

Yesterday I made a business card holder out of the wide end of a men’s tie.  I cut it far enough up to hold the cards, then stitched the cut end closed.  Next I attached ribbon to the point with a cute button, so that when you fold the point over the “inside” of the tie, the ribbon can wrap around and tie it shut.  It came out cute, but I don’t have pics yet.

Things for the weekend…

These are made out of 2 identical placemats each. The tall one my daughter wanted, but a little smaller, so we folded down the top then sewed them. We added a man’s tie as the handle. She can’t wait to show her friends in school tomorrow! The others were made for my friend’s two girls.

My Friday Thing

Are you ready… the thing I made happen today…

I got a new job!

I’ve been looking for a permanent job for almost seven months… and today I was hired in an upper-level management position at a post-secondary school I’m very excited about.  So, I figure that’s a good accomplishment for today!

On to making other felt and jewelry things tomorrow…

Thing 5

I’m finally starting to catch up.  Thing 5 I made on my lunch hour.  It’s a tea wallet for my mother.  It easily holds 4 TAZO tea bags and 4 packets of sugar.

Some strategy…

I’m thinking that I could go in a million different disconnected directions and end up creating very little.  So, with that in mind, I’m thinking that my first few craftings will consist of organizational helpers like…

  • Crafting notebook - to keep ideas, lists, photos, etc.
  • Needle/scissor keeper - to have all my embroidery needles in one place
  • Craft bag - to have lots of ideas and project possibilities with me at all times
  • Paper caddy - to carry my paper projects and favorite paper gadgets in

After that I will turn to the business of creating things for others. I have in mind some of the following:

  • Felt fun things - like brooches, dolls, ornaments
  • Jewelry
  • Bags/purses
  • Notebooks
  • Stationery and stationery folders
  • Fabric thumbtacks
  • And, hopefully, other fun things!

OK - so 4 days to the first project!

Time to put my crafting cap on…

OK - I’ve never thought about creating a thing-a-day before, but I’m totally up for it!  As a matter of fact, I can’t wait, and will be starting a notebook today to list my ideas (complete with checkboxes for noting completion)!  Mostly I work with paper, fabric and jewelry, so I’m hoping to stretch my creative mind beyond those and delve into new media in February.  Good luck to all my fellow thing-a-day-ers!  I can’t wait to see what we all come up with!
