So, I finally did the triceratops…

Glad I managed to make it to the end, and I’m going to keep this up a while longer, and do some more dinosaurs for my son. What happens next? Will there be Thing A Day 3?
Thanks everyone, for the inspiration!

Thing 22 was building our family’s snow dinosaurs last Friday:

Things 23 through 28 are more bits of scratch art. Dinosaurs, Mikro’s stuffed penguin, a weird imaginary bird, a memento of the snow dinos and some traced hands. Inspiration was in rather short supply the days I did the handprints, but on the little boy one, I wrote down the things he likes doing with his little hands– tickling, petting the cat, making crafts, holding hands with mama & daddy, etc. Anyway, just one more thing to make tomorrow, and it should be my favorite dinosaur, triceratops, but I’ve been afraid to mess it up, so I’ve avoided it…

Woot! We got DSL. Of course, we first had to convince the phone company to turn the phone back on, because they screwed up and canceled the originally attempted FIOS order (wiring not ready in our neighborhood), and canceled our phone! But all is now good, and we finally are off dial up. But I am woefully behind online. Haven’t been able to do anything. Hence the massive catch-up post…
Thing 15: Guan Long, a T-Rex ancestor recently discovered in China:

Thing 16: Plaster casts of animal tracks made (from molds) at the Nature Center:

Thing 17: A rose (from my head, no photo, so not the best…):

Things 18 and 19: T-Rex and Pterodon:

Things 20 and 21: Pachycephalosaurus and Hadrosaur:

Whew! Glad to finally get this posted!

Could you guess that my almost five year old is suggesting what I draw? And does anyone have an idea how I might go about protecting the surface from accidental kiddo damage? I’d like to put together a little book of the dinosaur scratchies for my son when we’re all done, but I suspect he’d have them unrecognizable in no time…

Made timely, posted late.
Number 9 is a clay eagle thingie made at the Hudson River Eagle Fest with my son Mikro’s assistance.

Thing # 10 is a sort of found image. It’s the carboard side of an amazon box that had a really cool glue splotch, colored with caran d’ache crayons. The colors are a little off due to the flash, but you get the idea. At some point, when I can fight my way into my studio and excavate through the strata of clutter burying my lino carving stuff, I’d like to carve a stamp of this, or maybe make a monoprint…

Day 11 resulted in a bit of scratch board silliness- a frog, and at Mikro’s behest, a stegosaurus…

Edited to add that I didn’t make the car beads. Bought ‘em on ebay.

Well, I made it on time, but my seven year old computer with the maxed out memory and the dialup connection isn’t playing nice… And it got me so frustrated, I just walked away from it for the day.
Anyway, a collage:

Just a sketch (from my head, no photo reference, which you can probably tell) of my son at the beach. Ugh, the hand on the pail is embarrassingly bad…

Today I learned to make some origami animals (instructions from the 2008 Origami A Day calendar), which is a new skill for me. Fun and pretty easy once I figured out how to interpret the pictograph instructions…

Inspired by yesterday’s visit to the BBG Lunar New Year Celebration. Collaged decorative papers, scraps from hand pulled prints sold in collage packs by printmaker M. Lee, foiled paper, old playing card, fabric, junk mail, magazine clippings, photo of my son, caran d’ache water soluble crayons.

Well, I made a couple of things today, but my ancient computer is struggling to download my camera as I type this, so I guess I’m going to be late for my 3rd Thing.
We spent the day at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens for their Lunar New Year Celebration, and I made a paper flower and a sachet in their free workshops. On the train ride home, I made some shrinky plastic insects for my bug obsessed almost five year old.

Decorative papers, silver reflective cloth skull and bit of ribbon cut off of a hair scrunchy thingie, caran d’ache crayons, tin tile. We are off to a Lunar New Year event at the Brooklyn Museum of Art tonight. Hopefully that will provide some inspiration for Thing 3.

Though I haven’t yet figured out a grand unifying theme for the month, I’m happy to at least be making something rather than sitting around thinking about it. I am a SAHM of a little boy who keeps me busy, and my art time is almost nonexistant these days. I’m hoping this challenge will get me back into the art-making habit. I was considering doing a daily craft with my son as my Thing, but I’m not sure if I want to do that or try to steal myself some grownup time…
Tonight’s effort is a collage of felt, cardstock, shrinky plastic, sharpies, beads, fabric, all glued together. Inspired by my friend Becca telling me today about her dog who loved to pluck lemons off the tree and roll on them. Dog looks like my late great Mocha Dog , though. The title is “Citrus Smile”, although the dog’s red tongue and mouth appear to have cooked black… This is my first time playing with shrinky plastic, so it was a learning experience. Next time I’ll remember to poke holes before cooking… Anyway, this was a stretch. Definitely outside my comfort zone, which is paint and canvas…
