In few words: Freshly laid off from my corporate 9-to-5 design job, I'm feeling a bit burnt out in the creative department. This thing-a-day project is just the kick in the butt I need to dust off some mental cobwebs and force me to pick up a paintbrush or some pastels and get out the gluesticks! I'm excited to get started!
So it’s the last thing-a-day and I’m in pittsburgh!
Not sure if I was going to have computer access or
not, but thanks to my friend Preslav I am able
to post. Here’s just a silly little sketch I did before
dinner. It’s been a really wonderful experience creating
something each day and sharing with so many great
creative people!
I know this isn’t very exciting, but I’m leaving soon
to visit my fiance in Pittsburgh for a couple of days. I didn’t have
time this morning to paint — but here is something I should be
working on anyway! Packing a box or two here and there for moving.
So here’s a box of some books that’s going along with me today.Yippee!!
I’m really hoping I’ll be able to do the last post out there tomorrow.
Well, my portfolio is finished! (with editorial work anyway). And thing-a-day
is winding down. I’m going out of town tomorrow so I may or may not have computer
access for the last 2 days. Today I started playing around with some watercolor stripes and
ended up with a sunset. It reminds me of a lovely one my boy and I saw one October
in Trexler park.
Ok, I’m a little embarrassed to say exactly just
how long I’ve had this software sitting around
waiting for me to install it on my mac.
So since this has been on my list for a very
long time, I chose to finally sit my butt down
and do the install. Thank you thing-a-day for
a little extra motivation!
Thought I’d make a little sketch of some
of the items that were on my to do list for today.
(the exception is the sushi dinner — that was a
lovely spontaneous outing — thanks Judy!!)
The park that I love to go to has a resident
great blue heron. I almost always
see it in the park on days when I’m feeling
like my spirits need a lift. It’s a breathtaking
sight when I see this graceful bird glide above the
treeline. I wasn’t at the park today, but this collage
reminded me of a day last week as the sun was starting
to set, making the sky all pink like cotton candy……and
there was the bird……made me smile.
Spent some time this afternoon going back into
my portfolio and arranging more of the layouts
in the sleeves. Have a little bit more to do yet,
then it’s just playing around with the pacing. Hooray!
It was a snowy wintry day here in PA today, so I
was cooped up in the apartment for most of the day.
I motivated myself to clean the bathroom (amazing!),
did some shovelling, and then decided to make some
chili. It turned out pretty good, although now I wish I
had made some cookies as well! But there’s still time!
The recipe originally came from Martha Stewart’s everyday
foods magazine, but I modified it a bit. Here’s a photo — as
you can see, I’m no food stylist!
Today I made a birthday card for my good friend Kiki
(we even share the same nickname — she’s 1 and I’m 2). Tonight I had the great
pleasure of meeting up with some very fabulous friends from my former
place of employment (some of whom check my thing-a-day so thank you so very much for
the lovely evening!). We celebrated her birthday and my new adventures — it was
a very wonderful night out!!!
I was feeling a little out of sorts today.
Sometimes when this happens my fiance
would make these elephant noises over
the phone at me to make me laugh. And it
always worked. I started drawing with a sharpie
today and one elephant appeared. Then I fit another
elephant into the negative space that the
first elephant at the top of the page created. I ended
up with some stackable elephants and a lighter mood.
I’m not particularly fond of what came out
of today’s thing a day……a lot of stuff rattling
around in my brain. In a nutshell, let’s just say
I wish I was a bit more decisive, more of a risk taker,
and a lot less wishy-washy
No painting today…cooked dinner for
my fiance. Brown rice, shrimp, snap peas,
various veggies, ginger, lemon juice, soy sauce
and avocado on top. Very easy and very tasty.

I was originally going to do something else for today’s
thing-a-day, but I got sucked back into putting more
layouts together for my portfolio. I am sure I have way
over the limit but this way I can swap things out here
and there. I still have about 5 more magazines to go
through yet! whew! So……not very exciting, but feels good
to continue making progress!!
It snowed here almost all day, so I locked myself
away in my art room and worked on more portfolio
layouts. I feel like I really made a lot of progress today!
I took a break as it was getting dark outside to take
a snowy walk in west park. I had the park all to myself…
it was silent except for the falling snow. I decided to make
a snow angel for my thing-a-day. Here it is along with another

Today I continued working on my portfolio. Made
some progress. Still have a bit to go, but at least
I’m moving forward! I put together an image of
3 shots of the portfolio spreads. Here it is…after
seeing it I realized that it would be so much smarter
to have the cover of the featured magazine on the left
hand of the spread with the accompanying spreads
on the right and the turn page. I’ll flip things around
tomorrow.
Today’s thing-a-day and probably tomorrow’s too
is for me to get cracking on finishing up my portfolio.
I’ve been procrastinating entirely too long and by making
this my thing-a-day I’ll actually give myself a deadline.
(Which I desperately need in order to get anything done it
appears!!) So here’s a start — tagging some issues of the
publication I worked on for the past 7 years. Whew!Tomorrow’s agenda is cutting out the tear sheets and taping
them together — then it’s just arranging what I want to keep
in the portfolio!
