His Shadow

In few words: I am a student studying . . . things - people, places, things, ideas. Sky's the limit (or is it?)

So, because I have been very busy doing school work and traipsing around Scotland, I haven’t had much chance to do a “thing” today on caliber with what I have been posting recently. I apologize, but hopefully I will be back and energized enough tomorrow. In lieu of going out, I decided to stay in and write a few poetic lines having to do with the religious somebodies that live upstairs (or is it downstairs . . . or maybe just in my walls). Hope you enjoy none the less :)
Winter’s Slumber
The muffled chanting
is all around, seeping in through walls
from walls, embarrassing my silence.
It is rhythmic-mystical,
many voices sharing foreign syllables
that roll from noses.
I sniffle words,
keep them jailed in clenched jaws
while their god shakes bangles
to the buzz of earth’s people.
This muse be
what bees sound like
to caterpillars -
a collection of souls
invested in Vedas.
Outside the rain’s on mute
as it prickles hushed puddles.
I reach for another sweater,
wool socks and a sip of tea.
I have only just not drawn up blueprints
for my cocoon.
Greetings. My thing today is the end result when you combine a block of ice, your average desk lamp, a pretty winter leaf (or two) and a Canon 300D. The image editing was all done in iPhoto (unfortunately, as my computer is really in no mood to run Photoshop) and it was photographed with a 28-105 lens, which was not ideal, but I am at least interested with the results. I hope you enjoy! The full 10 photo set (along with all my other photos, well, at least the most recent 200 - I’m cheap like that) can be seen here.
When you don’t have money to spend on expensive posters and other collegy stuff, electrical tape to the rescue!

My thing today was inspired by something that happened to a friend who had left his car with a flat tire for three days in a movie theater parking lot. When he returned there was a sheet of canvas with a note on one side and an abstract, yet warm and friendly painting on the other. My note reads:
“Hello Friend,
I do not know who you are or what you look like, but I want to tell you that I think you are a beautiful person, regardless. A friend once told me that she believes in telling people nice things about themselves because even that small amount of positive energy, when repeated enough, has the capability to change the world. Well, I am not one for that sort of extreme optimism, but I do think it true that the smallest random incident is enough to change the outcome of a day, or hour - perhaps just an instant . . . but isn’t it worth it to try? So I hope you future happiness and peace of mind.
Enjoy the snow, your friend”
So, February 1, 2008. Second month of the year and first day of this challenge. Feeling inspired by my friend’s really nice nature photographs from yesterday I took to the great outdoors for today’s create-a-thing. I wanted to, in the spirit of Andy Goldsworthy, create something that interacts with the natural environment. Being on a university campus in a large city, I thought it appropriate to engage the human “footprint” with the concept of beauty or creation or . . . What emerged was this little design, left inconspicuously on a seldom-traveled set of stairs near a big campus cafe. Perhaps in a couple days I will check back in to see what remains and if anybody has taken notice. Some notes:
