I bought a little over half a pound of scallops ($8.10) at market today. eat them while they’re fresh, she told me. they’d just been removed from their shells last night, a lovely image to accompany my purchase. I went on to pretend at buying an obscenely expensive bike and discovered at brooklyn natural that I’m not the only one who can’t identify parsley from cilantro (they look quite different it turns out). at home I lazed about on the couch watching a guilty pleasure movie on tv, until I realized unhappily that my treasures were sitting on my desk, their freshness escaping with every passing moment. later, removing them from the refrigerator, I dropped the bag on the ground. maybe they’ll be more tender now, I thought hopefully. eating them felt like an experiment. were they overcooked, undercooked, just right? I couldn’t tell. I do know they were fun to make and were pleasing to the eye if a bit confusing to the palate.

a doodle. apparently it was global-warming gorgeous outside earlier, but now rain has foiled my bike riding, knife buying plans. maybe a hint to get on that sewing machine.

yoga bright and early at 10am but still no scallops for me. instead, half a dozen brown eggs, pasta fresca, a ufo-shaped onion, and flowering succulents straight from the sea.

it was amazing to get back on my bike after all this time.  a helpful gentleman pointed me in the direction of the garam masala at patel bros where I might have cut someone in line. the three of us all happened to make dishes involving cumin. we argued over pronunciation, and I couldn’t make them see the error of their ways. later, at daddy’s, bizzy and I drank pints and pet a black dog named blackie. the giants won. we yelled, fist-pumped. it was anti-climactic. I won’t get lost riding home if there is a next time.

yesterday I was busy giving will withering looks, not finding spinach at the greenmarket, kicking up into a handstand on the final try, and analyzing how she move (and my date) with jason.

bizzy didn’t have to go into work so I fixed us a breakfast of tofu scramble (with mushrooms, corn, edamame, and onions) and a spinach salad (with dried cranberries, goat cheese, almond slivers, and raspberry vinaigrette). topped that off with a chocolate from our advent calendar (still), and it was all quite yum in the tum.

tonight I cooked a tasty lentil dish with apples from a recipe courtesy of orangekerry. trevor drank magic hat no. 9 and raided my music collection while I chopped away at celery and garlic with what in another person’s hands would be considered a bread knife. I guessed at spice measurements and tried to use my oven to toast bread. for once my calendar is correct on the first of the month.
