Fridays are Cocktail Days for my Thing-a-Day!

I started this on Sunday night, infusing vodka with candied ginger.

My invented drink uses this infused vodka, 2 oz. of it, with…
0.5 oz. of homemade sweet & sour mix
2 dashes Fee’s orange bitters
and one of my homemade brandied cherries for garnish!
It turned out pretty well balanced, with sweet, sour and spicy flavors!

Valentine’s card with pop-up heart and rubber stamp letters. Simple and mushy.
Sorry, single folk… I don’t want it to seem like I’m rubbing your face in Valentine’s Day, but this is for Thing-a-Day!

Not much time to do anything today, as I was in meetings and plugging away on work projects today well into the evening. I didn’t eat dinner till 11 and I’m exhausted. Thought I’d fit this sketch in 15 minutes before this day was up.
Took this iSight photo and sketched over it in the (very cool) Mac app, Skitch.

Made this flower pins out of Shrinky-dink plastic and straight pins. Some warped a bit more than I’d like, but I still like ‘em

A few years ago, I made a cozy for my phone. I took it a step further with this iPhone cozy, which has a flap for full coverage.

There is a bit more width in the fabric than necessary, but better than not enough!

I like the chairs that DWR’s annual Champagne Chair contest inspires (check these ones out!). I’m only getting my feet wet.

It started with the Woodford Reserve ad used for the center coaster, and I went with a similar color scheme for the rest!
Made of magazine clippings sandwiched between glass, sealed with foil tape. All of these are double-sided coasters, with different images on each side.
The shot of bourbon featured in this photo is Eagle Rare Bourbon, which was made into a Manhattan soon after this shot was taken… made with Carpano Antica Formula, Fee’s Orange Bitters, Angostura Bitters, and a dash of juice from my homemade brandied cherries. Waste not, want not!

I’ve decided that Fridays of this Thing-a-Day month will be cocktail creation days!

This one is inspired by the home of Mardi Gras, New Orleans. A Mimosa-like variation on the old standard, the Sazerac.
Build in glass:
1 tsp. absinthe (I suppose Pernod will do as well)
0.5 oz. Rye Whiskey
2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
Top with in equal parts:
Sparkling wine (I used Freixenet Cava)
Orange Juice (I prefer “Simply Orange”)

I drew my Nohohon-zoku (a bobbing-head toy I got in Japan) with some Pentel “Aquash” watercolor crayons. Fun technique, still getting used to it!

I like those old snapshots that I see in my parents’ photo albums, with their square format and muted colors, so I decided to make one of my own!

This was inspired by a friend’s comment that my boyfriend looked like he was from the 1950’s (definitely not a bad thing!). Below is the original photo (click on thumbnail to embiggen):

Hello, what’s inside?

More boxes!

When I was a kid, my family hosted a Japanese exchange student, who made me a series of nested origami boxes that I kept for years. She was able to make them down to a tiny enough size that I could fit a rice grain in the smallest box!

I couldn’t accurately make any smaller than the size seen here, which would fit a quarter coin.

I made these wine charms (you know, for identifying your wine glass at a party) outta Shrinky-dink material and wire loops.

Decoupaged Tissue paper made these old candleholders look classy.

I’m fascinated by papercraft, since it seems like an evolved form of origami. And it doesn’t really cost anything to produce (I guess paper and printer ink, but that’s minimal).
These two toys are exercises for me to eventually build more complicated papercraft, and perhaps eventually be able to design my own!
Lessons learned: glue stick would probably be better (I used craft glue). Perhaps invest in some tiny sharp scissors… I used my exacto knife for the bulk of this, and my hand hurts!

This is my first creation for my first Thing-A-Day ever:

They’re some food-themed marble magnets (click through to the Flickr page for details/notes on each magnet).
In the late hours of the last day of January, I jotted down some quick ideas for the month. I don’t feel entirely prepared, but I am excited to be exercising a bit of creativity every day outside of my regular job (I am a graphic designer by trade). Happy to jump into it and get my hands dirty!
