Todays thing a day is a drawing a some sheets hanging from space. I don’t have time to upload a photo of it, and it’s way too large to scan. I made it in my drawing class, and I think I learned a lot about using line quality to create depth, and learned something about creating depth in general. Creating believable spaces has always been one of my biggest challenges in drawing, and this class will hopefully address that!

20 Minute Abstract Monster Madness!!!!
20 minute abstract monster madness!!!
20 minute abstract monster madness!!!
As an aside, there is just something about LCDs and computer monitors that just can’t mimic the warm crisp black goodness that is a conte-crayon drawing.
On Deck:
Whatever I make in my drawing class tomorrow, or else something else, that I make before.

Compostic
Today’s thing:
They are composters! I ordered them a couple of months ago, and I finally got around to rodent proofing them, and digging them a spot in the ground. Now I can start making compost for the awesome garden I’m going to have. As a total bonus, I moved three shrubs that used to be where the composters are (new houses come with the silliest landscaping some times…) to much better spots. Win win!
Tomorrow:
Not sure, but It’s gonna be hard to squeeze in. This whole week is going to be challenging. The fallback is to draw a 20 minute monster from my head.
Okay!
So, I finally took the time to draw that old ghost of failure that has been haunting me since childhood - a sci-fi army guy. I think I did pretty good considering I had no reference. Some of the proportions are off, and some of the angles are a bit funny, but overall I’m pretty happy with it, and it’s way better than anything I was capable of in elementary school
Tomorrow I feel like I will do another drawing, or maybe (maybe?) a computer game.

The realities of life.
Today I had to settle for making some curry and rice and broccoli for my thing-a-day. Work lasted too long, and I’m too tired to work on the logo. But, that curry was delecious! I’m finally starting to get the hang of making Indian food.

Pendant
After some amount of frustration, I finally got my copper etched pendant going. I’ll post the photos tomorrow!

Super Secret Plan
I was trying to come up with a system for making sure I actually get this done. I kept worrying about getting home from work, and not having any idea what I would make, or having any preparation done at all. So I came up with a system: I’ll have one idea ‘on deck’, that’s what I’m going to do the next day, and four ideas will be warming up. I don’t know if all of the warming up ideas will get used, but the next day’s on deck idea will definitely come from the warming up queue.
On Deck (for Feb 1):
Fried Vegetarian Spring Rolls
I’ve got a little party to attend tomorrow. I have loved egg rolls/spring rolls since I was a kid, and I’ve always wanted to make them, and I never have. Tomorrow this is all going to change. If I can find them (99% likely) I’m going to try to get ‘egg roll’ skins, not ’spring roll’ ones. As Wikipedia and my dining experience tell me, egg rolls are bigger and have more delicious puffiness than spring rolls, and are generally better. The recipe I’m using comes from Savoring Appetizers, which I got at half-priced books. It has a photo of every recipe in the entire book, thusly earning it status as food porn. The plan is to make the rolls, fry one, photograph it, eat it, blog about it, and then fry the rest and go to the party.
On the Hot Plate:
- Drawing some kind of sci-fi/gi-joe/action figure type character. My tastes in generating art don’t tend to fall in this category too often, but it’s on my todo list from my childhood.
- 3D Model of a spaceship that can easily be translated to sheet metal
- CRPG - Can I make an entire lame computer role-playing game on super-bowl sunday? Time will tell….
- Flower Press + Flowers (Saturday hiking expedition? Flowers near Seattle in January? Seems unlikely)
Unmade Things.
Kind of like unfinished business. I started thinking about what I could make, what I ’should’ make, and not a lot of things occurred to me right away. But then, I started thinking about things that I wanted to make when I was kid that I never did or never could. I can remember a lot of them, so why not start there? I don’t know that I’ll make anything verbatim off the list, but I’m sure I’ll make related things!
- Movie (I actually wanted to make a camcorder when I was a kid, sadly, my design was inadequate).
- Computer role-playing game.
- Choose-your-own adventure style book, only with fighting (like, lone wolf books, you know?)
- Any meal from Yan Can Cook
- Captain Power Armor (Seriously. I can’t make this though)
- Landscape painting from my imagination (like Bob Ross)
- Realistic looking drawing of some kind of GI Joe like character (Jonathon O*** could draw them so well….)
- Model spaceship (I made them out of legos, never really satisfied me)
- Bracelet or necklace (all the cool kids had them…)
- Pound puppy (I have no idea, but I really wanted to make one….)
- Platform scroller (video game)
- Drawing of a good looking monster of some kind (any kind, really!)
- Herb Garden.
- Flower press + pressed flowers

Product Vs. Production
I love the idea of making things but often get overwhelmed (or underwhelmed by my efforts, anyway) by the process. I hope that producing something for 29 (go leap year!) straight days will help me finish other projects. I’m really looking forward to the challenge of thinking of something to make and making it every day.
