flip books and thaumatropes

ok, so little embarrassed- i’ve been a few days absent here and haven’t even chosen a theme for the week yet, but i taught my first classs ever yesterday, so my post is the result of the preparation for the first session. it’s an intro to digital animation for high school students at the cloud foundation- a non-profit arts organization for urban youth in boston.
so, these are projects from my first class– flip books an optical toys. videos of them in action would be cooler, but it’s late and im bit intoxicated, so stills of the collection will have to do.

hula projection

i created this sketch yesterday and projected it onto a set of boxes i made on day 1. some crappety pics of the installation can be found on that same page.
click here to launch the swf and see the animation.
it’s not real deep. but it served the purpose of the excercize- it’s a stretch for me to think of flat, 2d media living in 3 dimensional space, so this was kind of fun to put together.
p.s.
anyone know how to embed a swf in a post? having the damdest time- my object tags get wiped out and because i have a short embedded video clip exporting to flv drops the hula movie.

vellum cube installation

here’s a test run of my installation experiment using vellum cubes. sorry, the pics suck. also should probably have made a video to get the ‘full’ effect of the sketch, but… i didn’t.
was happy, though, with being able to peek into the boxes and watch how the images fell or broke along each side of the cube. tomorrow will post the animation i used in the projection. it’ll be a bit out of context, but whateves.

sunday and my theme’s on vacation. there are, however many surfaces on my nachos…
ingredients: white corn tortilla chips with a few baked corn tortillas (cause i like em), 1 can each black and refried beans (heated separately), mexican cheese blend, pickled jalepenos, all layered and baked at 375 till the cheese melted then topped with salsa made with cilantro, roma tomatoes, scallion, lime, salt. condiments: sour cream, guacamole, various sundries.

nylon garment

er, i didn’t make this. but in thinking of materials that i could to project onto (my weekly theme) it occurred to me that they could be refereces as well- objects, articles of clothing, etc. will have to think on how to arrange all or some of these for a test drive on monday…

vellum boxes

i need to think about projection surfaces for an installation class i just started. im not a
sculptor so this is sort of my first into the world of… 3-d, tactile, reflective objects one
can project onto.
was a tad overwhelmed with the possibilities. has sides? reflects light? means something?
sucks? so am sticking with simple shapes, textures or repetitions this week. made a few
boxes to start.

i resolve to not have so many holes in my production of things as last year. i think i trip myself up with bizarre performance criteria. so, i simplify– allez!
