Day 18: Thing 18: CD Hole Based circuit board.

I havent made a circuit board in ages. I was thinking that if I made circular pads for the leds they might make a decent reflections for the display. I made the etch mask for this out of the holes for press on cd lables and 1/8″ engineering tape.

In the middle of this I realized that I need to get some more tinning solution.

I plan to cast this in less expensive fiberglass resin once I have finished the 4 panels.

Day 18 - Oatmeal Bowl

I went to You’re Fired in Salem, NH with Danielle this afternoon and painted a bowl. I totally forgot to take a picture in its unfired state, but I’ll put it up in a week when I get it back.

Time spent: about an hour?

two color pysanky egg

Today I finished applying the wax on the lime green egg that I started yesterday. The pattern was an abstract basket-weave pattern with some variations. It was a good project to practice with the electric kistky. A lot of my wax lines were not exactly straight (and impossible to correct once drawn), but the mistakes and wonky lines mostly blend into the overall design. After I completed the wax application over the lime green egg, I dyed the remaining unwaxed parts turquoise. Then I removed the wax in the oven. It was satisfying to be able to finish an egg in only 2 days.

doodles, and works in progress

I have been drawing a lot of silly doodles the past few days, one of which is posted here.

Yesterday I spent my day working on an installation in Max/Jitter, with a friend, still in progress.

A new development with Sustainable South Bronx and the Fablab is turning my illustrations into prints ;)

Working on a Mural

day-13-translation.jpgI’m working with a friend on a mural in her massage studio, so a few days ago I translated a few sanskrit words she wanted included in the mural into a devanagari script…day-18-mural-sketch.jpg Then today I began working on the layout of the boarder, script, and images for one of the walls. This is sort of a side project in between jobs, but I love doing things like this because I can add them to my portfolio in the end.

Photography - my first love

It’s been awhile - like 10-15 years - that I experimented with alternative (read, historical) photography. I remember building a pinhole camera in high school and playing with cyanotypes in college. I bought this Sunlight Print kit years ago and, of course, never got around to trying it out. I began with botanicals to start and really love how they turned out. I used flowers and the pods of the same flowers for 2 groups of 3 photos.

I bought all these window frames a couple of years ago and it occurred to me in passing (since the frames and the sunprint kit were near each other in my apartment) that the prints would fit perfectly in the panes. My plan is to properly mount them and enclose the back of the frame and display it in my home.

Sorry about the flash - I will have to reshoot these in bright day light. Thus, I give you just the photos without the glass.

So, which do we like best? Which should I mount and frame for my home? Please chime in; I am conflicted as I like both. I think I have a similar frame stashed away at the back of my closet - if so, I’ll go with both. But for now, let me know which you prefer.

I am beyond pleased with how these turned out - I love them.

Day 17 : skirt

I didn’t get the chance to blog this yesterday. I’m not much of a sewer, but this is my attempt at a pull-on skirt. It works, but there’s a lot of wonkiness to it. I think it’ll be good to wear around the house in the summer, though.Elastic waist skirt

If you please — Draw me a sheep.

Just like the aviator, my painter’s career was stifled at an early age.  But, rather than place the sheep in a box, I chose to make a pompom one instead.  He looks quite healthy and like he might live a long life, but based on his size he probably will need a lot of grass.  Maybe I should have gone with the box….

Kimbap - Day 18

I visited Korea at the beginning of the month and had kimbap for the first time. Here’s me making it:

egg on flickrP1170538.JPG

The egg has soy sauce in it and was delicious by itself. Ingredients involved: the egg, cucumber, green onion, radish, steamed spinach, can tuna, carrot. And sushi rice, and kim (nori). The rice I cooked by following the directions on the bag, except I didn’t have time to soak it. I just rinsed well and simmered on the stove. I put a cloth napkin between the pot and the lid to catch excess steam, a trick I learned on the online as I’m not a very good rice cooker. I guess I should really buy a rice cooker. Though I’m wary of kitchen appliances that only do one thing.

Here it is done:

Day 18 - Clay Tools

Today I got sick of slicing inconsistent little slice beads so I jury rigged a slice bead cutter by putting some of my test blades into a lump of clay at even intervals (it’ll make about 3 1/2 - 4mm thick beads). This should work until I get a flexible tube / slice bead cutter figured out! The pic really isn’t an alien bug.

Slice bead cutter

Most of my ‘crafting’ had little to do with real clay today. I spent the bulk of my making time, fixing up and finishing up a tutorial for sunflower and aster canes. A few more pics to edit and I will be so done that mess.

Aspiration

My previous post of tying aspiration to action stuck in my head, and I felt I needed to make the collage I had referenced.

It’s tough to capture what I had done, but I’m happy with how it turned out.

Thing 18 - a fleet of airplanes

I made a few airplanes at work today while waiting for a script to run. They were pretty basic, but I had this idea about a pretty good, easy, plane I made as a kid. I couldn’t recall how to make it, but tonight at home I found a site with a similar version to it, which I made via template. I also made a few more, some of them are decorated, including cockpits for the tiny pilots, aka the little people.

Baker’s Edge Lasagna

I’m back after having missed more than a few posts… I was out of the country for a week and when I returned I had much to catch up on, but now I am back in the thing-a-day craze and today’s thing is Baker’s Edge Lasagna:

Day 18: Mountains

Mountains

In Hawaii,

the mountains

are not like

sleeping giants

in the sun

with their backbones

stretching along the horizon.

Instead,

they are more like

mothers

with their bellies

rising gradually,

dangerously pregnant

with possibility.
