Day 17 - Momma’s Little Baby Loves Short’nin’, Short’nin’..

True story: a couple of guys see a need for something cheaper than animal lard to make candles.  So they invent the method for partially hydrogenating vegetable oil.  People love it.  Then, somebody else harnesses electricity, and people don’t need candles anymore.  So the two guys say, “Hey, this looks like lard! Let’s tell people they can eat it and bake with it and let it do all the things butter can do!”  That’s where Crisco came from.

I sent Crisco back to it’s roots.

I’ve been saving this stick for a long time just for this purpose.

I let it burn for about 15 minutes, and worked on my long-neglected, ridiculously huge, single-crocheted afghan in the meantime.

Crisco has changed its recipe lots of times over the years.  Recently, they even removed the trans fat (partially hydrogenated oils).  They still use fully hydrogenated oils, however, and new studies are saying those are even worse.

Don’t eat Crisco. Make a candle instead.

Time spent: about 20 minutes.
