Day 11: Thing 11 — led arrays

Today I got 2000 little leds in the mail.

They are really bright. So of course I had to play around with them. I made 2 8×8 arrays one is made of magnet wire with no supporting background. I will figure out if I am going to mount this on somehting later. In the mean time I built one on a perf board. Both took for EVER to make. The one on the perfboard is wired to a maxim 7219 led driver to be driven by an arduino.

Day 11: iPhone Cozy

Thing-a-Day 11: iPhone Cozy

A few years ago, I made a cozy for my phone. I took it a step further with this iPhone cozy, which has a flap for full coverage.

There is a bit more width in the fabric than necessary, but better than not enough!

Day 11: Whole Wheat Bread

About a year ago, my husband decided to eat more naturally.  Over the course of the year, he’s cut out all high-fructose corn syrup, white flour and sugar, transfats and fried foods.  And looks great for it too!  (there are always exceptions for holidays, nights out to dinner, etc, but he mostly sticks to it!)

So, I’ve been making all our bread…100% all natural.

I don’t have any pictures this evening, but my house smells great, so I know I made it!

5 tsp yeast mixed with 2/3 cup warm water

1/2 cup oil

1/2 cup honey

1/2 cup dry milk mixed into 2 cups warm water

2 1/2 tsp salt

Combine all above ingredients.

Add 5 cups whole wheat flour ( I use my kitchen aid)

When that’s all mixed in, add about 2 more cups whole wheat flour…until it  “looks right” :)  and knead in the mixer for a couple of minutes.

Let rise for 1 hour.

Divide into two loaf pans and rise about 45 minutes.

Bake at 350 for 25 minutes uncovered, then cover with foil (to keep it from burning on top) and bake another 40 minutes.

Day #11 — Bok Choy and Red Onions

bokchoy&redonions

Tonight I made a stir fry of bok choy and red onions for dinner. Actually, I suppose it’s closer to a braising of bok choy and red onions, but whatever, I’m not particular. The sauce over them was good, but I put way too many fennel seeds in it. Everything still turned out OK though.

DAY ELEVEN - singing valentines outfits

My school’s choir does “Singing Valentines” every year - students buy grams for their valentines or just their friends and write their class schedule on the card. The choir splits into 2 groups of girls and 2 groups of guys, and we find them in their classes and shower them with obnoxious affection in the form of song and dance while wearing ridiculously pink outfits. Oh, high school.

My group of 8 girls’ outfits consist of pink and red plaid pajama bottoms and white wifebeaters with candy hearts with different phrases (QT 3.14 might be the most creative, ever) ironed onto the front. The back has the name of the singer and the year. I ribbon-ed the shirt/pants up and made tags with washing instructions. (I should probably be doing my homework, haha).

This one still feels unresolved. Something in the composition didn’t come out right, but I can’t put my finger on it.

TAD #11- Organizing the workbench…and other diversions

Given that my life has been pretty much chaos for nearly five years there are parts of my house that have been severely neglected. The basement, which I am sure is indicative of some psychological something or another, is my dirty little secret. No one goes down there, so it’s become a virtual dumping ground for everything that I can’t deal with.

The workbench has been a major source of consternation for me lately, given my remodeling projects. I can’t find tools, I go out and buy hardware only to discover I already have three boxes of the same thing….that kind of thing…so tonight I began the cleaning of the workbench. I am still not done, but that’s because I am easily distracted. I became irritated by the cable and phone wires that my contractor pulled, but never bothered to attach to their proper outlets in the basement, so I took it upon myself to tack up the wires, cut them off at the proper length and then figure out how to attach them. (Even he didn’t have the six wire phone wires attached to the outlet properly…thank god for the interweb.) But, I digress…

The workbench before I started to organize it.Here is a picture of the workbench before.

The workbench -midstreamHere is the workbench in mid-stream.I have this pile of miscellaneous bags of crap that I need to sort and put into the organizer at the end of the bench, but that thing is falling apart and I think I need to either fix that or buy a new one. Anyhow, right now, there is space at one end and things like tapes, wires, brushes, tubes, boxes of nails and screws are all sorted and in their own places. Whew.

More tomorrow.

P.S. My phone and cable are both working great in the new space!

Mittens- times two

I’m making a new pair of mittens, did the first one today. They are for my roomie.

These ones not only have the flap for the main fingers, but they also have a small flap for the thumb. I think they are hilarious.

knitting things

For day 11, I knitted a gauge swatch on pencils! I got gauge, too, and knitted most of a slipper on a set of double pointed needles that were actually pencils sharpened at both ends…but it became obvious I wasn’t going to have enough yarn to make a pair, so I frogged it.

I also did some more documenting - I wrote up the pattern for the rabbit I made for Thing 4. It’s on my Livejournal, here if you’d like to take a look.

11. Book Pillow

I saw someone else make this as their thing-a-day, and I wanted one too, so I made my own. I used fabric scraps, yarn scraps, and other odds and ends as stuffing. It’s a good way to recycle those little bits that you would normally throw away.
