day 8 - Data Visualization without Computers
I always want to tell people how ridiculously shaky the Path Train is. kind of skeptical in expressing in video or pictures…
so tonight, i did a little quick data vis.
Ok, so this how the drawing came out. I was leaning on the wall inside the train, one hand holding my sketchbook and one hand with a pen.
I was holding the pen as relax as possible and just let the shaky train do the work.
Towards right hand side, those crazy stokes are the crossing river shakes(From New York to New Jersey). It shows the speed and all different sudden turn.
The little line group on the right bottom corner was when I almost got to newport. but the turns are just too crazy when approaching the station that I decided to grasp the pole instead, even tho I am actually a pretty good train surfer.
but here’s what it is. No fancy programming or accelerometer.

we are all riding that train with you now.
bright idea!
I used to do this on the schoolbus when I was a kid!
Great idea. The lines came out quite beautiful—not a quality I usually associate with the PATH train.
This was unique and interesting. I think I may use your technique on the Paris metro and compare.
