thing-a-day no. 5:

COLOR RUINS EVERYTHING!
(I colored yesterday’s drawing in Foteaux-shawp. ugh)
(EDIT: I got rid of the airbrushed crap, as per Calvin’s suggestion and now it’s a little less offensive)
The official round of thing-a-day is done. Thank you all for your incredible work and see you next year!

i like the color. as well as b&w version.
I love it! In my opinion you should make that hat. It’s wonderful.
i do agree with you that the color detracts from it. i think it’s a little much maybe you could resolve it with jut two colors?
what rowstyles said.
I’m a big fan of b/w with minimal colors.
Hey!
Thanks for the comment! I really like your illustration style - as for the colors, I like them though I do think it would look cool if they were desaturated a bit with that old worn vintage color feel- awesome job!
As for quitting - I don’t think I’ve ever felt better.
I loved the black and white, but I think this one is great too. I like how the red heart earrings pop out (I didn’t even notice them in the b/w).
I want that hoodie - that exact one, in yellow, with red drawstrings, and with the JO on it!
The colors look great Hellen! I love how you use photo backgrounds. I wish I had hair like your characters. sigh.
NO> color is nice! (but ditto on them both being rad)
My personal opinion is dat you should cut out the use of the airbrush tool/gradients. Flat colors really suit your stuff!
WHOA! thanks for all the feedback, friends; I really appreciate it! I never get this useful color info on my blog (which is strange, some of you post there ya jerks) so your comments are really really useful to me.
As for color, I tend to just kind of pick my color choices really arbitrarily, and its really rare when I actually like how it turns out in the end. This is not really one of those instances.
I’d like to one day be able to color insanely, like this Shintaro Kago cover but in a way that looks cohesive and pleasing. I’m also a fan of minimal coloring but that hat desperately wanted some ugly coloring
Do you ever play with the color/hue sliders in Photoshop? I *never* pick the right colors to start with and it always takes so much tweaking before I’m satisfied.
P.S. If you want to be torn a new arsehole w/ art criticism, you should post at gingerbox (http://gingerbox.spiteshow.com)! There’s so many fucking awesome artists that post and they have impossibly high standards. They’d love your stuff there.
Well, I didn’t see it til you “fixed” it, but I really like it. Reminds me of rave flyers from back in the day (not a bad thing in my book!).
Oh my gosh! i have to have that hat. if you don’t make I shall….that is if you will grant me the permission.
bbgun, I encourage you to make the hat and then post it! I’m going to make one too but I don’t sew so well so it’ll probably look like shit.
shaddup, i love the color.
