Kivi’s Valentine: part 1
Kivi, my six year old daughter encountered me working on a valentine’s day project for my wife. She loves art and craft and hung out and helped a bit and later, asked if I’d make her a valentine. But I wanted it to be substantially different from what I’m doing for Cathy. So, this morning, having gotten up early, I quick-drew a valentine on a sheet of cardboard from a shower door that we’re putting in downstairs, cut it out, marked it up with black sharpie and white gesso and then started sticking down strips and pieces of the colored paper-towel that I made on the first. I got to the point that you see here before wanting to stop and let the gesso and matte medium dry. I’ll work on it more, maybe tomorrow.
To me, the shape is great. I’m not a very skilled drawer, but in practicing, one thing that I’ve learned is that when I’m quick and gestural, I find my work more pleasing than when I’m mechanical and careful. I could have made a perfectly symmetric valentine but it would have taken lots of time and ended up kind of sterile. But that’s me.
Oh, you can probably tell, from the background, but this is about 2.5 feet across.

Very sweet! It reminds me of cotton candy. Your daughter will love it!
