walk with winter

today the earth absorbed me 
deep into a stone gray sky  
punctuated by bare branches- 
that seemed to reach, 
deep and seeking 
rough bark 
burned against my skin  
scissor stepping 
catching reflections in store front windows
i hopped puddles 
sloshed in icy shorelines 

smiles pass off lips of passersby
wrapped head to toe in warm fabrics 
reds, blues
when i am nervous to meet their eyes- 
i look down at my shoes

the earth absorbed me. frozen crust. so warm, pulsing brown underneath. the heart. the hearth. spreading warmth up 
from the soles of my feet.
