My Trip to Newark
For February 2nd, I created a trip to Newark, New Jersey to see Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, and Gary Peacock. I made some sketches along the way:

i love your illustration style–the detail, colors, and composition are remarkable. i feel i get a sense of the people you drew.
Nice loose style. I am envious of your ability to work with wet(tish) mediums whilst in motion/on the go in general.
Excellent captures…is that your foot in the first one, or someone else’s? I’m curious because I wear the same brand of shoes and took a photo like that at work once:

I bet that concert was exceptional. Great players, the three of them. I really love your economy of line in the stage setup…just enough detail but not too much.
Again, great work. I dig your style.
You have a really cool style, I greatly enjoy these. It reminds me a lot of a French artist called Honore Daumier - http://www.absintheposters.com/images/M/MDaumier-Absinthe-Caricature.jpg - He was pretty famous, so perhaps you have a bring future ahead of you (of being a 19th Century French artiste?
)
also, if you don’t mind me asking you a really nerdy question, what type of pen do you use? Do you have a particular brand you go for? I am sort of a fiend and am gathering input for my next purchase.
Thank you all so much!
That is my foot. It is quite flattering to be compared to Daumier. I have no problem being considered old-fashioned.
These are Sakura Pigma pens—a .05 Micron (fat for a Micron) and 3 Graphic (just plain fat).
you are very talented!!! do you lay down the color first and then the black lines? how do you know where to put color (do you do pencil sketch beneath it all?)?
Thanks, Polkadotwitch! Talent or not, it’s hard work that makes this stuff possible.
No pencil. Black lines first, then color. I put color wherever the hell I fell like it. There’s no wrong place when it’s your own work!
I especially dig the last.
