The official round of thing-a-day is done. Thank you all for your incredible work and see you next year!
Ok, what’s this organizing stuff? Nope, won’t do it… ain’t going to happen. I am firmly resolving to have my thing a day be spontaneous, silly unexpected & fun. And you all should not tempt me, with this being organized stuff!
Yikes!! what if i run out of ideas? what if i don’t have all the pieces i need? What if i don’t have computer access one day?
See, you are tempting the perfectionist already… Nope i say, i won’t do it!!

I’m really excited about joining this group and devoting some time each day to art projects. Hopefully it will become a regular part of my schedule that I can continue past February. I work at home with my two kids (3 and 1), so most of my creative time has to be planned around their (hopefully overlapping) naptimes. My recent obsessions include making pysanky (dyed eggs) and handmade felt, using both wet felting and needle-felting. During February, I would like to finish a few of my felt projects, make some more handmade/dyed felt for my stash, and work more on pysanky, particularly on improving my skill with the kistka (the wax application tool). Good luck to everyone and have fun!
I’m tempted to have my students participate in this, but with 8 and 9 year olds, I’m not sure I have enough time in my school day to have them do it in class. I don’t see the majority of them doing this at home.
Even so, I’m quite excited about this, but I don’t want to plan any. I really want to fly by the seat of my pants. I know that drawing, painting, and cooking would be my fall-backs, but I’m hoping to do something else, too. Perhaps some books or sculptures.
Taking from the suggestions on the website
knit = I may start a knitting project, but there is no way I knit quick enough to finish an item a day.
cook= I cook dinner almost every night so this really doesnt count. However I do have some special baking projects that I’ll include.
draw and paint = I’m not much of an artist, but I will bring out my stamping supplies and do a little stamping.
tape and solder = again skills I dont have.
write= Writing a short story? a poem ? Could that count as my thing for a particular day?
install = Could that be installing something decorative at home , perhaps creating and decorating a couple of the rooms that need a little personality
destroy & invent = I have no idea on these but boy do they sound fun
document = Could I document something that I do? Document my soap making?
What I can do that isnt listed?
Sewing , crocheting, soapmaking , candlemaking. Of coure what ever i do should only take half an hour each day, i think I’ll focus on small projects that can be done versus elaborate projects that impress.
I’ve been thinking about doing something a day for a while. I recently found the Skull-a-Day website, which totally inspired me, but I’m not that artistically inclined. Actually, I don’t want to share my artistic flounderings with the blogosphere. If I did a drawing a day I’d get better, but I don’t want anyone to see the starting point after I’ve been out of practice for so long.
So, on my way in to work this morning I saw a big plastic bag in the parking lot and I picked it up and tossed it in the trash by the door out of habit. I do this a lot-pick up after other people. And it hit me. I’ll pick up a piece of trash a day. I’ll try to take photos, I guess. Maybe I’ll just keep a log of what I’ve picked up. Maybe if I find something good I’ll keep it. One piece of trash a day out of the parking lots of Austin may not make a huge difference, but maybe people will see me and realize the world isn’t their trash can. Especially the people in my (to remain unnamed) apartment complex. I’m not going to wait until February to start, either.
I’m trying to learn how to draw. It’s fun because I know that I suck at it and never let myself try until now. This mostly consists of me drawing ghosts with boners, copying Taiyo Matsumoto and Lynda Barry and wasting ink.
I do other stuff (hopefully) better than sketching, but this seems like a good excuse to get a scanner and stay on a schedule. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
So yeeeah…I’m very spontaneous. I can’t just say “I’ll make this on day X, and this on day Y.” So we’ll just see what happens. Hopefully I have enough time to do this, and access to the internet every day. xD I’ll do my best!
First year trying this out. \. ./ Yaay. Let’s see how badly I screw up. Yaaaaay.
First NaNo, now this. :ⁿ Should be interesting, if nothing else….
OK - I’ve never thought about creating a thing-a-day before, but I’m totally up for it! As a matter of fact, I can’t wait, and will be starting a notebook today to list my ideas (complete with checkboxes for noting completion)! Mostly I work with paper, fabric and jewelry, so I’m hoping to stretch my creative mind beyond those and delve into new media in February. Good luck to all my fellow thing-a-day-ers! I can’t wait to see what we all come up with!
I’m not much for planning - I kind of jump in to whatever I feel like doing, so preparing for this is a bit weird. I’m sure I’ll appreciate this list of stuff to do, though, later into February. I’ll post my list later.
I.m anxious but excited to do this challeng this year. I am hoing to use this as a way to make an art journal ,write poery and maybe either learn to weave or crochet and make myself something.
‘do something creative everyday’ has long been a mantra i’ve aspired to, but most days pass without me picking up a paintbrush, needle and thread, camera, or sketchbook. i’m super excited about the motivation that thing-a-day will bring!
I’ve already created a list of projects I’d like to finish by the end of the year. Hopefully, this will speed it up and help me along finish smaller projects on a daily basis.
For a sneak peak on what’s on the list:
- Green/pink wristwarmers: add buttons
- Fuschia/light pink wristwarmers: finish second and sew in ends
- Crochet orange clutch: need to add lining and clean border with other color
- Purple scarflette: add silver buttons so I can wear it
Hi! I’m really excited to start this Thing-a-day! It’s gonna be a very productive February!
Hi everyone. I’m so excited to get started on Thing-a-day! I’m the kind of person who collects ideas and supplies and gets very little finished in comparison, so I’m hoping this will be a good motivator for me. I tend to spend most of my time knitting and reading and ignoring the myriad other projects that share my space, so my plan is to try to give some time to those other things. It will be a big challenge for me. I’m also participating in Project Spectrum so I’ll likely be making things that are red, pink, or orange and/or related to the element fire (two birds with one stone, you know). I’m also trying to take more photos and improve my skills in that area, so I figure that even on my busiest days I can at least take a picture. I’m looking forward to being inspired by all of you.
I’m getting excited for this to start next Friday!!!
Any clues as to what the first theme is yet?
Greetings all. I live in Durham NC, (anyone else nearby?) and have an art studio downtown. I am using this site as motivation to: finish my website redesign so I can link to it daily, create everyday, and to possibly host thing-a-day working sessions at my studio for anyone interested. Contact me if you’d like to collaborate on a project or if you’d like to meet in Durham for added motivation. tammi jo at mac dot com.
